Civic Clubs Are
Urged To Aid
Youth Training
. By Rosemary Moore
Mrs. John W. Jenkins, of the
First Baptist church staff; told the
Lions Club Thursday that is is
their responsibility to educate the
young people of Athens and im
prove their social behavior.
Mrs. Jenkins talk was made as
a result of the broken lights in the
Athens’ High School.
Since the home is the best place
to teach young people the values
of life, Mrs, Jenkins explained, the
members of the civic clubs in Ath
ens, as parents, have the opport
unity to change the attitude of the
students.
“They must realize,” Mrs. Jen
kins continued, “society is greater
than the individual.”’
To do this, she pointed out, the
blindness born of ignorance and
prejudice must be remedied. While
the improvement of schools will
counteract ignorance, prejudice,
which is even more prevalent than
ignorance, is best corrected in the
home.
When the home succeeds to wipe
out prejudice, “especially our local
prejudice against the truth that
all men are brothers in the sight of
God,” Mrs. Jenkins assured the
Lions, “one world” meaning one
society will result.
W. A. Abercrombie preceded
Mrs. Jenkins speech with the an
nouncement of the presentation of
a plaque by the Lion’s Internation
al to the Athens Lions Club for
making the greatest gain in mem
bership. They gained 27 new mem
bers this year.
Guests this week were John Col
mant and Reverend Maurice
Thomas.
