Galye, white and shaken, was
half way down the stairs next
morning when she aeard the
lmaid saying. “I’ll tell her, but
yMis. Bartlett isn’t well.”
| “It’s all right. Jane,” she call
ed. “I'm coming.”
She met her mother-in-law at
the front door. “Come in, please,”
ae said. “I'm not sick—just
ltired: that's all.”
| Mrs. Bartlett murmured her
|regrets and meved into the liv
jing room. with Gayle following.
lOnce they were seated, she l.gh
ted a cigaret and considered
iGayle thoughtfully wvefore speak
ing. Sae looked . especially hand
some, Gayle thought, in a blue
suit and small. pert hat. She un
fastened her sable neckpiece and
itossed it on the arm of the da
lvennort. Then she spoke:

she began, “to Sycamore, and
he brought three ftickets for
spetding with him.” She sighed.
“He was very difficult.”
Gayle said nothing. There
seemed *o he nothing for her to
sav. g
Mrs. Bartiett stubbed her ci
garet in a trey. “I have never
seen him so nioved.” she went
on. “He was quite beside him
self. He can’t lose you and Kent,
my dear.”
Then Gayle spoke. “He has
lost us.” ey 1
“Oh. no! That must not be; it
simply must not be. He adores
you—simply adores you, my
dear”
Words were being forced from
Gayle. and so she spoke them.
“It deesn’'t matter any longer,”
she said. her voice utterly tone
less.

' THE BANNER-HERALD, ATHENS, GEORGIA,
.’ “But it does; it does, my dear.
I am selfish, I know; I ‘confess
it. I am thinking of my boy-—of
his happiness. .He simply can’t
be sdparated from r you and
1 Kent.” 3 .
| “Please, Mrs. Barlett.” Gayle
held .up her hand in protest. “I
“can’t go over all this again. Bart
hasn’t -had anv consideration for
[Kent or me. I've been a faithful
iwife. and I simply will not live
with an lunfaithful ‘usband.
‘Bart has lied to me and lied to
me. I can never trust him again.”
‘ “You judge so harshly, my
!dear, After all, Bruce is only a
{boy, ang he has greater tempta
j tions than most men. You save
no idea how women: have always
run after him.”
Gayle sighed. “I'm afraid vou
have no. idea how hé runs after
the women. Please, Mrs. Bart
{lett. let’s not talk about this.
I'm so tired—and it’s no use.”
Mrs. Bartlett promply sur
rendered. Being far from a fool,
she bhad not thought from the
first that there was any use in
her plea. but it \had seemed un
!Dleasantlv necessarv to make it.
| The thing obviously to do was
!to move as smoothly as possible
| to the real ob ject of her visit.
“Well, I must accept the sepa
raticn for the present. I see
that.” she said. ’You will remain
here. of course.”
“I haven’t had time to think,”
Gayle replied wearily. “I won’t
stay here. though. Of course not.”
“But why not? It’s your Liouse.”
“No. Mrs. Bartlett. It’s Bart’s
house.”
“He’s never signed it cver to
you?”
“No. I didn’t think about it,
and he gidnt either.”
‘“He must,” said Mrs. Bartlett
decisivelv. “He must at.once.”
“No—no. I don’t want it. I
won’t accept it.” %
Mrs. Bartlett attempted to ar
gue, but Gayle was obdurate.
She might remain for a while,
she said: she didn’t know, but
nothing would induce her to ac
cept ownership in the house.
“Very well,” Mrs. Bartlett
sighed at last. “You make every
thing so difficult, Gayle dear.
But vou must permit Bruce to
provide for you and Kent. There
can be an allowance—or, if you
prefer. a settlement. There is no
need to go ‘o court about these
matters T nromise you he will be
generons”
l Then Gayle smiled. Even at
that moment the fiction of Bruce
acting for himself struck her as
lamusing. “You mean vou'll be
leenerous.” she said. “I know
Bart hasn't anyfiing of his own.
{But T don’t want anything. Mrs.
ißartlett. You don’t understand. I
‘don’t want the house, and I don’t
want an allowance or a settle-
Iment. I merelv want to be free.”
. In spite of herself, Mrs. Bart
lett gasped. She %iad made the
offer in the face of Bart’s violent
objections. He 'nad stridden up
'and down her room roaring that
the wouldn’t let Gayle have one
.damned cent. “1 told her she'd
be sorry,” he had said over and
lover again, “and she’s going to
be. SL.e can starve for all I care.”
I Carefully she had explained
Ito him that Bruce Bartlett could
|not deprive his wife and child
of support. The publicity would
,be unendurable. He must be
generous: he must be more than
Igenerous. Mae larger the sum he
settled on Gayle, the more credit
he woulq receive—and the less
she would.. It was Mrs. Bart
ieit’s object to shower so much
money on Gayle that to the
public she would seem mercena
ry and grasping. And now Gayle
#ad refused to accept any money
whatever.
“But, Gayle,” she protested,
“my dear, you aren’t thinking.
Don’t vou realize that Kent will
some day be the heir to the
Bartlett estate? He- will be a
verv rich man some day.”
“No. he won’t. He won’t be
#le heir when I'm divorced. I
remember the will. If Bart should
die before vou do. you can do
what you please with the estate.
Don’t wil] any of it to Kent. I
won’t let him have it. He’s not
vour heir, and he’s not Bart's.”
Once in ne: car again, Mrs.
Bartlett’s eyes sparkled with
bafflement and rage. She ' had
come as a Greek bearing gifts.
but the gate« had been shut and
they woulq not open. There
must be some other way, %icgh.
The-e was bound te be a way. . .
