For a week Gayle made no
move, and then two incidents
combineq to frighten her into
awareness and action.
Mrs. Evans telephoned. “Some
thing has happened,” she said,
“I Mink I ought to tell you. I
didn’t know a thing about it urtil
an hour ago. I wanted to sece
Betty Kingston about something
and rang he- bell. The elevator
happened to we at our floor and
the boy saw me. He told me the
Kingstons had moved away—
Holly Too. They're all gone.
They went day before yester
day. he said. It seemed to me—"
“Of course!” Gayle interrupted
“Of course! I can see the reason.

You were awful kind to let me
know. I never dreamed anything
like this would happen. Now I
don’t know what to do.”
“Have you seen a lawyer yet?”
“No. but I will”
And %e next morning Bart’s
pvicture facéd her lin the news
paper. He had enlisted in the
Air Corps. Even for Bruce Bart
lett, he had been given a sur
prising amount of space.
By evening she had reached
several decidions, though she put
only one into action that day.
At dinner time she telephoned
to Duncan Godfrey. Mr. God
frev was a man weil in his six
ties. a widower who lived in a
big house only a few hundred
va~ds from Gayle’s own. An old
friend of Van Dyke Bartlett’s,
he had been one of the first
callers on Bart and Gayle after
they had moved into their home.
He was the head of an important
law firm in Manhattan,and Gayle
felt sure 4ale could give he- the
advice she so badly needed.
“Are you busy this evening,
Mr. Godfrey?” she - asked. “I
really want io consult wou on
a business matter, and I suppose
T ought to go your office; but
vou would do me a great favor
if vou could see me tonight.”
“Let me call on you,” he sug
gested. “It's a beautiful evening,
and I'll enjoy a stroll.” )
2- * &
To her relief, Mr. Godfrey
came promptly at eight.
When %iev were seated in the
living room, he studied her open
ly anAa then said. “You don’t
look well. Gayle. Is something
gerious the matter?”
“Something very serious, Mr.
Godfrey. I’'m lost. I hope you can
tell me what to do.”
“I’ll do mv best. Waat is it?”
. Keeping firm control on her
emotions and in her vioce, Gayle
THE BANNER-HERALD, ATHENS, GEORGIA,
%old him the whole story up to,
and including; the items about
Bart in that day’s, newspapers.
“Yes. 1 saw thenm,” he said
whien she had finished. “Joel
Dwizht did his work well.”
“Joel Dwight?” Gayle frown
ed in taought. “I’ve heard the
name, but it_ doesn't mean a thing
to me.”
“It doesn’t? I'm afraid there
must be a good deal d@bout your
in-laws you don’t know. Wy,
Joel Dwight is the public rela
tions counsel who takes care of
publicity for the Bartletts. He
sent that story to the papers.”
Mr. Godfrey lit a cigar and
took several long puffs. Then he
said thougatfully, “I think I see
what is happening. I don’t sup
pose you know it, &ut I'm sure
vou won a strategie Victory when
vou refused to accept Bartlett
money. Octavia came here to buy
you off, and Tl'll wager it never
occurred to her she couldn’t.
Octaviy thinks money can buy
anything. Sae thought she could
buy you, and she wanted to buy
you for just one reason — 10
rsotect Bart. She has' a terror
of scandal.” e
“Bart has too,” Gayle said. “I
hadn’t thought about that at all,
but I know ‘le has. 1 don't think
he could bear to be criticized in
public. He’s always been a hero,
vou see.”
“Exactlv—and now he’s in
danger of being revealed as a
scoundrel. That, of course, is
whv he enlisted—the deed of a
hero—that and to faave a legiti
mate excuse to get out of the
State and stav out. Tell me, are
you planning to stay on ln this
house?”! e e
“I don't want to. Besides, I
can't afford to.” ;
“No. and I think you would
be unwise if vou did. T.eave as
soon as you conveniently can—
and stick to vour decision to re=
fuse any money from the Bart
letts. If any money is deposited
to vour account, refuse it. And
watch your step every minute.
Remember, they have, taree pur
voses: first and foremost, to pro
tect Bart’s name: two. to put you
in as bad a light as possible; and,
