FRIDAY I
Icrness puzzled her a little.
“A movie,” she said.
| “T'll pick you up about seven.
gOkuy‘.’"
| Cassie nodded. “Don’t bother
iubout getting out, in the rain,”
! She opened the door and made @
run for it up the walk.
None of tae family had noticed
the car apparently, Papa was en
' grossed in his paper and the rest
were in the kitchen, Cassie took
lorf her coat in the bedroom, hung
’it up. “
| “Any mail?” she asked Mama
'as she came into the Kkitchen.
‘She’d long since given up hear
ing from Mike, and there was no
one else who'd write, but ‘the
habit 'of asking persisted.
“None for you. Leni got a let
ter, from the Cavendiga boy, 1
think.”

“Funny, isn't it,” . Lenl said,
looking up from her books spread
on the Kkiichen table, ‘“that you
‘never hearq from Mike?” She
cmiled triumphantly. “Yon
thought he was crazy about you,
didn’t you?” £
Cassie froze for,an instant. It
was the first time she had ever
|heard anything like that from
Leni,
“I didn’t expect to hear from
him, Leni,” ghe answered quietly.
A trembling feeling went al] the
way through her. x
l “I bet not,” Leni mocked. “You
were nuts about hwn!”
} “What’s for supper, Mama?”
Cassie went to the stove and
peered at the daops {rying in the
skillet. “Well, chops! We're
lucky, aren’t we?”
“Heck, yes,” Sid yelled. He
sent a paper airplane careening
past her head. “And 1 found a
couple of cans of kidney beans
too, the last two cans they had!”
Sid always did the marketing,
usually managing very well de
spite the food saortages. Mama’s
feet hurt too badly for her to
walk to the grocery. she com
plained. and” Leni always had
other things to do.
Cassie didn't mcntion Parker
to the family.
i
It wag rataer nice to be getting
ready to go out on a date, even
though it was only with Parker
Hamilton. “Only with Parker
Hamilton!” she thought wryly. A

Yes, the evening turned out to

in a desert of dullness that was
Cassie’s life these days.
Leni was openly jealous. “Lon
