FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla,
Feb. 27— (AP)—Billy Southworth,
who drove his Boston Braves to
a bang-up fourth in last year's
National League scorcher, expects
to throw a faster, more powerful
club at the boys this season.
At the same time, however, he
expects all three of the teams that
bheat him ocut—Sßt, Louis, Brooklyn,
and Chicago—to improve, too.
“As for my team,” he said to
day, “I know we’'ll be faster, have
more batting power and Dbetfer
pitching. It’'s a lot better looking
club than showed yp here a year
ago. If Mort Cooper pitches the
kind of ball from the start that
he pitched toward the end of last
season, we'll give them a race.”
First, Third
The biggest improvement in the
Braves, Southworth feels, will be
at first and third base. Earl Torge
son, a long, limber distance hitter
from Seattle, is supplanting ailing
Ray Sanders at first, and Bob
Elliott, the Pittsburgh beauty, has
taken over at third, giving the
club a slick fielder and potential
.300 hitter at the far corner, where
they were shaky much of last
year. §
In fact, it wouldn't be too sur
prising if the Braves opened the
season with a complete new in
field.
Assured a stable infield, the
Braves pilot intends to plant
Johnny Hopp, Tommy Holmes and
Danny Litwhiler in his outfield.
' Mort Cooper and Johnny Sain
give the Braves a potential “Big
two” pitching set-up that could
do big things.
The Braves are well fixed for
catchers, with Phil Masi returning
to carry the load and Henry
Camelli looking like a very smart
replacement.

—The Indiana High Scliool bas
ketball tournament, which starts
this week-end drew 781 entries
and will draw around 1,500,000
spectatorg before it ends. - The
final at Butler Field House in
Indianapolis was solg out long
ago, . . The kids will play about
700 games in four days to reduce
the field to 64 teams for next
week’s program. . . ~ .
Wonder what’s in the story,
which took a long detour through
the Midwest, that Bernie Moore
will drop out as Louisiana State
football coach after next season
thoughr his contract has another
year to run. . . . Puerto Rican
baseball fans pitched-S7O onto the
field when Fernando Pedroso of
Ponce hit a homer against the
Yvankees the other day. If that
happened when the Dodgers were
around, Branch Rickey probably
would collect the visiting team’s
“cut.” .
