Lions Hear Talk
On Progress
.
Of Radio In U. S,
Richard 8. Nicheson, assistant
professor of radio journalism at
the University of Georgia, was
the guest speaker at the Thursday
meeting of the Athens Lions Club,
“The -Early Development of
Radio” was the subject of
Nicheson’s speech. He told Lions
Club members and their guests of
the origin of radio broadcasting
in Wilkinsburg, Penn., in 1916
He traced the development and
progress of radio stations and
networks from the beginning 1
the present time.
‘The speaker pointed out that in
America to-day there are 5 mil
lion homes without electricity
equip%ed with - radio; 7 million
radio homes without electric irons
and automobiles; 13 million, with.
out refrigerators; and 15 million,
without telephones.
“Radio’s future,” Nicheson said
in conclusion, “will depend so a
large extent on the broadcasting
indusfry and the awareness of its
responsibility.”
Nine Lions Club members
answered ‘“yes” to the question:
“Do you recall the first national
broadcast of radio?”
J. B. Young was initiated into
the Club with Henry Rosenthal in
charge of the initiation ceremony.
