Part Of Gambling
NEW YORK-—Charlie Mosconi,
former bigtime vaudeville dancer,
tells this one about the late Col.
E. R. Bradley, the famed turfman
and one of the very few gentle
men in the gambling business able
to attain a widely dignified reputa
tion in a generally disagreeable
profession.
Bradley’s gambling casino—
never called a gambling “joint”—
at Palm Beach was a legendary
fixture there. Legend also had it
the colonel never would permit
his customers to bet if they were
not clearly able to afford it, There
are many stories of people being
welcomed. to the premises but
kept away from risking their
negligible incomes. The visitors
could eat, drink and have a vi
carious - good time watching
money changing hands, with the
usual percentage accruing to the
“house,” but without the oppor
tunity of joining financially in the
fun,
One afternoon, Mosconi tells
me, a lady of dignified mien
and quietly expensive haber
dashery arrived at the colonel’s
handsome office and refused to
tell her business to anyone but
Bradley himself. A courteous gen
tieman in the accepted southern
tradition, Col. Bradley bowed the
lady in.
| “You see, Colonel, 'm Mrs. So
{and-so,” she said, mentioning the
name of an occasional gambling
,client at Bradley’s whose identity
+was vaguely familiar to the
owner.
| “My husband has been gam
bling here a few times and lost
I a little money, which I didn’t care
about. But last night he lost
$23,000 and that means my family
will have a great deal of hard
ship. We're not poor, but losing
that $23,000 will make us poor for
a vear or more.”
The colonel called an assistant.
| “Get $23,000 out of the safe and
bring it here,” he ordered. ‘
| He hold his visitor he operated
» his casino only for those who
could well afford it and handed
her the money when it came, She
gushed her gratitude as she left. |
| That evening, the colonel
spotted Mr. So-and-so dropping
blue chips on a number at a
|roulette wheel. .He walked over
and motioned him aside, |
’ “I would prefer that vou not
play here any more,” the colonel
said. “Your wife was here today
ang, . \
The colonel explained the aft
ernoon’s incident, then proceeded
to moralize, winding up with an
eloquent sermon. But he stopped
suddenly when he saw his listener’,
smiling broadly. The colonel in
dignantly requested an explana-‘
tion. 1
“Colonel,” his supposedly bust
ed acquaintance said, “I did not
lose $23,000 here last night. T have
a fortune I'm sure is greater than
your, which I’'m assured in con-.
siderable. And while I respect
your attitude on this matter. X
think I must tell' you that you
have been nicely rooked, ]
“You see, Colonel, I'm rot even
married.” 1
