Jackets Invade Tomorrow At 4
Gallahan Probable
Hurler; Techsters
Boast Strong Team
BY EDWIN POPE
Sports Editor
The Georgai-Tech rivalry
is as alive as it ever has
been, and it’ll flare again
tomorrow at 4 o’clock when
the Yellow Jacktes invade
Ag Hill field for a joust
with the Georgia Bulldogs.
Coach J. V. Sikes, whose
squad dropped a pair of confer
ence tilts to Alabama, 2-8. 6.9,
will probably choose Bob Calla
han, freshman who tossed Mon
day against the Tidesmen, as his
starting = pitcher. Bob Still, an
other yearling, may also come in
for action either as a reliefer or
the following day when the
teams shift scene to Atlanta.
One More At Home
The Techsters boast their us
ual strong aggregation, and the
Bulldogs can attest to last year’s
prowess by the lickings the En
gineers handed them in the sum
mertime. Lewis Hook, Tech foot
ball star, is one of the outstand
ing infielders, and Henry Soen
ing, a-basketball light, is ex
pected to start at first base.
The affair is the next to last
home game on the Bulldog slate.
Final Athens engagement comes
Saturday, May 31, after the boys
from "The Flats. |
Probable Bulldog starters:
Pitcher, Callahan; catcher,
“Chicken” Gatewood or Pete
Gould; first base, “Chub” Jen
kins; second' base, Eli Maricich;
shorfstop, Virgil Bartlett; third
base, J. W. Spruill; left field,
Tom Jordan; center field, Morton
Smith; right field, Billy Hender
son. |

MILE RUN FEATURED AT SEC TRACK
MEET-AUBURN, ‘BAMA, TULANE,
TECHRUNNERS TO Efi)TyTI;FJT OuT
BIRMINGHAM, Ala., May 15.—(AP)—The first event
of the 1947 Southeastern Conference track meet here
Saturday, the mile run, not only will provide one of the
day’s feature races but it may go a long way toward de
ciding the eventual victor.
l If Tulane's Spencer Johnson,
*whose time of 4:24.5 in the South
‘west relays is the best this year
with the SEC, is able to snag the
five points which go with first
place, the Greenies may be hard
to overtake.
Johnson taces plenty of stiff
competition, principally from
Auburn’s Fred Carley and Whitey
Overton, Alabama’s Bob MeMil
len, Tennessee’s Louis Schneider
and Georgia Teh’s Jack Corri
dan. Carley won :ast year and
has been unbeaten this seasen,
his best time being 4:25 against
Georgia Tech, when he was only
a step ahead of Overton.
With more of the prophets look
ing for a close finish between
Georgia Tech, Tuxane and Louis
iana State, a shutout in the open
ing event would increase the
pressure on Athletes in other ev
ents.
Auburn, given an outside
chance along with Florida and
Mississippi State, must get high
point totals in the distance races
to stay in the runnjng.
Two Mile Also
Another wide open race involv
ing title hopes will pit Overton,
Johnson and Schneider against
edch other in the two-mile run.
Johnson’s 9:46.2 against LSU is
the best SEC time of the
season, but Schneider had 9:50.9
mark and Overton one of 9:51.5
when neither man was pushed.
Still another event without an
outstanding favorite is the 120-
ard high hurdles, where favored

home three first places for 5
points. H. ran a 23.9 low hurdics

and will be one of the strong

ST. ANDREWS, Scotland, May
15— (AP) —Charles Littlefield,
president of the United States
Golf Association, says his organ
ization has no feud with the
Royal and Ancient Golf Club of
St. ‘Andrew’s. -l
Speaking to the British Golf
Writers Association last night,
Littlefield said he and Vice=
President Francis Ouimet had
had discussions over the new
rules of golf brought out by the
USGA March 1. These rules had
been misinterpreted by British
newspapers as being a challenge
to R. and A’s reputation as be
ing the ruling house of the golf
world.
“pPromote Golf”
“We have a full understand-‘
ing,” said Littlefield, “and no one
is anybody's enemy. R. and ,‘
realize we have certain local in=-
terpretations of rules to make ‘in
America and they have their
problems to handle here. But we
are both out to promote the best
interests of golf.”
These discussions were believ
ed to have ended any misunder
standing that might have existed
between the USGA and R. and A.
over the jurisdiction of the rules
of golf. Littlefield is. here with
the U.'S. Walker Cup ftea
which challenges Britain’s mnine
year hold on the cup in matches
Friday and Saturday.
