Mr. Hartford came to Athens
with his parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Jim Hartford. sr. in 1028
He graduated from Athens High
School in 1937 serving as Cadet
Major of the school ROTC unit.
He attended the University of
Georgia, and was editor of The
Pandora, University student an
nual was a member of Biftad
Scabbard and Blade, Sigma Chi
social fraternity and was Cadet
Major in the ROTC, receiving

was to bring him ouistanding hon-~
ors. He was attached to Compa
ny A, 82nd Ren. Br,, of the fa
mous Hell on Wheels 2nd Army
Division as Second Lieutenant
and saw service in Africa, Sieily,
England, France, Belgium, Hol
lang and Germany. His compa
ny was the first of the Allied
forces to enter Bel!gium and he
received his Captaincy in the
Battle of the Bulge.
