THE STORY: Vicky is worried
about the way Sephie’s menage
will appear to Salty and his moth
or. Sophie promises to, invite
Mrs. Bagot to tea and to act com
pletely conve:glticinal.
Xllv
After she left Sophie twisting
ner hair into’a coronet, trying
2 new arrangement that Godfrey
Mansbridge might admire, Vic
-loria went back to her own room
and stretched out cn the bed.
Lying quiet, she tried to think
about herself and particularly
herelf and her grandmother.
She had always been known as
Sophie van Eyck’s granddaugh
ter., Did she want to remain so
all her life? It would be easy.
Granny would leave her well
provided for. She could probably
find someone to marry her and
plenty of companions eager to
welcome the only living descend
ant of the great actress. She could
have a comfortable, even a. dis
tinguished life by* coasting along
on her grandmothet’s name.
but did she want that?
If not, what did she want?

As Vibrant Energy is Released
To Every Muscle, Fibre, Cell
Do you get up in the mornings still
tired, feel down-and-out all day? Have
you checked-up on your blood strength
jately? Overwork, undue worry, cold, flu
or other illness often wears down the
red-blood-cells.
Every day—every hour—millions of
tiny red-blood-cells must pour forth
from the marrow of your bones to re
place those that are worn-out. A low
blood count may affect you in several
ways: no appetite, underweight, ne
.. €nergy, & run-down condition, lack of
. resistance to infection and disease.
e To get real relief you must keep up
-~ yourblood strength. Medical authorities,
% by analysis of the blood, have by posi
}‘ tive proof .shown that SSS Tonic is
. amazingly effective in building up low
. blood strength in non-organic nutris
" tional anemia. This is due to the SSS
4 monic formula which contains special
2 and potent activating ingredients.
; Also, SSS Tonic helps you enjoy the
food you eat by increasing the gastric
| digestive juice when it is non-organi
| cally too little or scanty—thus the stom
-1 ach will have little cause to get balky
with gas, kleat and give off that sour
4t food taste.
| Don’t wait! Energize your body with
| rich, red-blood. Start on SSS Tonic now.
As vigorous blood surges throughout
) your whole body, greater freshness and
:' strength should make you eat better,

Certainly not a career of any
kind of herself. She had not the
smallest talent. Did she want po
sition? Consequence?
Quite suddenly she knew ex
actly what sh. wanted. She was
just an ordimary girl and |she
wanted what all girls want: to
fall in love, to be loved, to have a
family group and connection that
had nothing to 'do with her
grandmother’s fame and Uncle
Max’s money.
In other words, she wanted
Salty Bagot. y
This conclusion Victoria arrive
ed at quite, as much through her
emotions as with her mind, for
she realized simultaneously that
unless she got what she wanted
her heart would break.
This knowledge made it im
possible for her to lie around
supinely and wait for Salty to
call for her. Although not nor
mally an energetic person, she
felt the need of exercise and
occupation. She would help
Hathaway in the garden she de
cided. Since he was so busy, and
gardeners so scarce, Hathaway
had been able to give Madame
van Eyck only two days a week
and the flower beds were sadly
in need of weeding.
The weeds were everywhere.
Vicky got down on her hands and
knees and began clearing the
base of each flower with meti
culous care. She weeded daint
ily — as she did everything —
treating each plant as though it
were the only one of its kind in
the world. An she thought about
her unaccountable and sudden
love for Salty Bagot.
Vicky had forgotten about God
frey Mansbridge when she heard
a man’s voice behind her saying,
“Hello — is anybody home?”
Startled, she screwed around
and squinted up 2t him, sitting
back on her heels. He was look
ing over a barberry hedge and
her first thought was surprise that
he was so short; the hedge near
ly hig him. Then she wondered
why he was so stout. He wore a
gray business suit whica looked
as if it were straining to cover
him, and above his black bow tie
his face was cherubically round.
“Hello,” she said,
“Am T in the right place?” he
asked calmly.
“I think you are,” Vicky said,
resigned. - She got to her feet.
“I'm sorry no one met vou. We
don’t use the car much now, of
course. The tires are so cld.”
He shrugged. “Naturally, I
never expect to be met. 1 prefer
my independence. I might have
decided at the last minute not to
come:” :
Vicky looked 'at him, puzzled
She had heard a good many dis—-!
ferent accents among the interna-!
tional idlers on the Riviera, but
was unable to place the one she
now heard. It was certainly not
American—and she had always
understood Mr. Mansbridge came
from Buffalo—nor was it" French,
German or English. “Well — I'll
show you in,” she said,,?‘and tell
everyone you're here.” '*
He followed her threugh the
French doors and she led, the way
to the drawing room. The minute!
he saw the picture over the man-'
tel he came to a halt beneath it, |
feet spread apart on the carpet |
and both hands thrust into his'
coat pockets.
“Oho!” he exclaimed. “I see I
sure am in the right place! Many
times I've looked at that portrait
of Sophie as, Juliet.” His pro
nounced accent made . the “r’s”
roll out across the room. “Por
trait” sounded like “porrrrrtrait.”
“I told Perrault,” he went on,
“that it was no good, too. Does
he still paint her once a year?
On—that burlesque of genius!
And he talks of art!”
* # *
“Well!” said Victoria, falling
back in astonishment, “I didn't
expect you to be like this.””
“What are you talking about?”
he demanded. “I've been like this
for sixty-five years. Who are you,

anyway?"
“I'm Victoria Jenkins.”
He came toward her slowly,
gazing intently at her face. “So—
he said, his voice suddenly gentle,
“yow're Victoria. Very nice, too.
The last time I saw your grand
mother, she had just had word of
your birth.” »
At that moment they heard the
voice of Sophie coming toward
them down -the stairs. “Godfrey!
Godfrey!” she was calling, her in
flection lyrical.
' Sophie entered the room with a
‘beautiful movement. She looked
'almost like a girl coming to meet
her beloved. “I heard you talk
ing from upstairs. Oh, my dear—"
She saw the visitor and stopped.
“Why—Basil! You? How did you
come here? What are you doing?
It is like a ghost! I don’t under
stand—l thought—that is—"
He walked over to her. “Are
| you not glad to see me? You have
not forgotten so soon!”
“Basil!” she said, in a whisper.
“Can’t it be?”
Then, genuinely overjoyed to
see him, she held out her arms
and they embraced. .

We, The Women
BY RUTH MILLETT
NEA Staff Writer /
~ A kindly man suggested we
set aside one day a year as Spin
ster’s Day to honor the women
who, though often important to
their communities and the stand
bys of their families, wget little
recognition in life.
In spite of his kind intent, a
Spinster’'s Day would be a cruel
blow to that group of women. It
would only serve to set them
apart, emphasize their loneliness
and point up their failure to
achieve what all women are sun
posed to regard as the only
really worthwhile career — mar=
riage. ~
