Any person of working age with
a physical or mental handicap to
full employment can receive edu
cational, advisory and placement
cervices without cost to himself,
if they can prove that they can
not purchase these services for
{hemselves. State and federal
programs or vocational rehabili
tation for the general population
~w provide the physician with a
mneans of helping his handicap
ped patients to become self-sus
taining.
Rehabilitation of the disabled
was started following World War
1. Many victims of disease and
injury acquired in the service at
that time wished to work rather

Any civilian in need of help
because of an employment han
dicap should consult the nearest
vocational rehabilitation office.
If he does not know where it is,
any welfare agency will direct
him.. The first interview is a dis
cussion of the applicant’s handi
cap, the trouble he has in find
ing work and his ambitions for
the future. Next he is referred to
his family physician for a gen

After this he returns to the vo

Need For Service
Rehabilitation is worthwhile in
every way as the money spent is
returned many fold in increased
earning power, There are 1500,-
000 men and women with physi
cal and mental disabilities who
need this rehabilitation service.
Trained persons yvho have been
disabled proved to be most valu
able employes during the war
years. As a general rule, they
had a better work record than
those who are physically more
fortunate. Vocational rehabilita
tion counselors insist that the re
habilitated man or woman can do
as well as the best worker.
QUESTION: When my husband
was a young boy he had polio
myelitis. Would this make our
son more susceptible?
ANSWER: Disabling infantile
paraiysis seems to be more com
mon in certain -families. Simply
because your husband had infan
tile paralysis does not prove that
he came from such a family as the
records of several generations
must be studied. |
We, The Women
BY RUTH MILLETT
NEA Staff Writer .
In defense of the much-criticiz
ed lavish parties he gave for
Army officers during the war
vears, Howard Hughes ig repor
ted to have explained: “If I
hadn’t extertained, I'd have
been behind the eightball, It was
to keep the customer happy.
When someone sells you a car,
doesn’t he tusually buy you a
cigar?” ;
That’s not a very apt compar
isom, Mr. Hughes. When some
body sells you a car these days,
you usually hand himm something,
and it's a gift considerably more
substantial than a cigar.
As for the necessity of keeping
the customer happy during war
time, it’s interesting to learn that
there was at least one industry
that foung that necessary.
Certainly nobody forad it nec
essary to keep the small customer
happy during the war years. He
was just teld in so many words
that he ought to be happy to be
able to make a purchase.
The little felow was tolg with
a shrug to take it or leave it. But
apparently that indifference to
the customer didn’'t extend to
deals in which big money was in
vo'ved.,
So while the little feilow re
members with distaste his role of
customer during the war years,
the big fellow has more pleasant
memorieg of being in ° position
where he wag the fellow ‘who
had to be kept happy.
Anyway, it’s interesting to
know that there were exceptions
—and such lavish .exceptions, too.
That much at least has come of
ihe current Senate investigation.
