'REVIVAY* As Ita'y’s industries begin to recover, women welders
-at word a¢ the Ansaldo shipyards near Genoa bring back a scr 2
‘ familiar to the U. S. During war.

ROME, — (NEA) — Italian in-~
‘dustry is slowly beginning to re
| cover.
' Production is still far below
| pre-war and wartime peaks, But
jat Turin, in industrial north
' Ttaly, the Fiat automobile plants
are employing 14,000 workers.
[ At nearby Genoa, the famous
'Ansaldo shipyards, undamaged
by the wa», are again building
ships for the maritime nations of
Europe and South America. An
saldo employs 6,500 men and 500
women. 'Other plants at Genoa
'are building electric and steam
. locomotives and railway cars.
' All together about 80 percent
,of Ttaly’s pre - war industry is
functioning again despite diifi
| culties it has faced. :
It is still too early to determine
what effect the new possessions
jtax will have on industrial re
i covery. The government has just
Ilevied a four per cent tax on all
!possessions. from furniture to
‘factories., In addition there is a

progressive tax Dbeginning at
three per cent on holdings worth
$6,000 ang arising to 61 per cent
on private possessions valued at
more than $3,000,000.
One serious drawback in pro
duction for many months after
the war’s end wag the uncertain
iy of Russian reparation pay
ments. Industrialists were not in
clined to push production, only
to turn the finished products
over to the USSR. This was par
tially settled with the signing of
the Ttalian peace treaty with the
Allies. Production has increased
since then,
Strong leftist union control has
been blamed for some of the
slowness in industrial recovery.
Material shortages, lack of for
eign exchange, trade restrictions
and war damages all have been
factors.
Despite these difficulties, An
saldo has completed 30 vessels,
tctaling 78,000 tons, since 1940.

The Breda works in Genoa,
which built light machine guns
during the war, now is working
at nearly 50 per cent of pre-war

for Italy’s war-wreckeq railroads.
However, Breda’s sole customer
is the Italian government, and
when its present contracts are

production; it has no foreign or

Before the war Fiat turned out
