ATLANTA, Aug. 7. — (AP) — Paul (Bear) Bryant,
Kentucky’s young football coach, at first glance appears
to have scored the South’s greatest victory since Bull Run.
A tentative roster of 48 fresh
man gridders lists 27 “Yankees,”
including nine from Pennsylvania
and ten from West Virginia,
Bryant, younger at 33 than sev
eral of his assistants, started a 10-
year contract for the Wildcats last
year by winning seven games—
more than any of his Southeastern
Conference predecessors.
To go with those 48 yearlings,
Bryant has 28 lettermen and
various other newcomers which
ought to rank his team fairly close
to the top this fall.
Reid Boys
Cliff Hopp of Hastings, Nebr.,
brother of baseball’'s Johnny and
football’s Harry (Hippety), has en
tered Georgia. He's a freshman
halfback. . . . The Bulldogs will
sport a brother act of three Reids
from Hamilton, 0., this. fall in
Bernie, Floyd and Ernie. . . . But
the brightest Ohio star in Wally
Butts’ ballyard at the moment
appears to be Bobby Walston, a
prep halfback star last year at
Columbus. Some think Walston
migt make 'em forget about Char.
lie Trippi in a couple of years.
A passing combination to make
southerners forget Alabama’s Dixie
Howell to Don Hutson combine of
a dozen years ago in shaping up
at the University of Mississippi
with Charlié Conerly doing the
throwing and Barney Poole, ex-
Army star end, catching. Conerly
had 65 completions in 124 attempts
last year. ...
! ‘Tennessee has 32 of its 45-man
‘Orange Bowl squad returning. . . .
But LSU has practically an all
veteran squad including an intact
first string backfield ready for the
fourth year of play. Bernie Moore’s
Tigers are heavy favorites in most
quarters to gobble up the title
without much of a struggle. . . .
Florida has'3s war vets on its ten
tative roster.
Until Shelby Kinney pitched a
no-hit, no-run game agairist New
Orleans g:nday,b no ‘Atlanta
pitcher had done it since 1921
when Johnny Suggs, father of
Louise Suggs, the golf star, ac
complished it.
Representatives from eight cities,
all except Little Rock in the South
ern Association, plus Jackson,
Miss., will meet Monday night at
Birmingham to complete plans for
'a Southern Professional Basketball
League. Ben Chapman, Philadel
phia Phillies manager, and Sports
Editor Raymond Johnson of the
Nashville Tennessean head the list
of prospective commissioners. The
teams will play a 56-game sche
dule starting in December.
