Veterans! Organizations and Agri
cultural workers will participate.
The program is being backed by
the Winder Kiwanis and Lions
Clubs, the Chamber of Commerce,
City Council. Veterans Groups and
local manufacturers.
Most of the farm has been clear
ed-only 50 years. In this short time
large gullies have formed by ter
races that were improperly lo
cated and protected. It is a typical
Piedmont farm with the major
part of the upland being Cecil
clay soil and lowland soil being
poorly drained due to frequent
overflow.
New Cropping Plan '
The required amounts of a fer
tilizer and seed will be used to pro=
duce the vast gquantities of vega
tation which is necessary for a
successful dairyman. Mr. Carlyle
and Mr. Blakey will carry out a
complete soil and water conser
vation program on the farm with|
the Oconee River Soil Conserva
tion District. T e
The farm plan which was work- ‘
_ed out by the owners and technical |
“representatives of the Soil Con
} servation Servive, calls for a rota
tion of row crops and small grains
with annual lespedeza, winter and
summer temporary grazing, and
permanent pastures. Adequate
acreages of each will be establish
ed to support 30 milk cows.
Selection of the farm was made
by a group of outstanding local
citizens. f
Mr. Blakey’s reaction to the ‘good
fortune was summed up in this
statement: “It's just like being
called to identify ‘Miss Hush'—
and you have the answer”,
Enlistimeni (Campaign
Will Be nitiated
By The U. S. Navy
‘An all-out campaign to enroll
in the United States Navy men
required to man and maintain
the essential activities of the
Navy Fleet will be conducted
throughout the nation during the
week of February 22nd to 29th.
. This. period . has been designa
ted as “Fill The Fleet” Week,
and will climax an accelerated
vecruitment activity to begin in
January.
Aim of this concentrateq cam=
paign, which bears the endorse
ment of national civie organiza
tion and leaders, is to enlist in
the INavy -enough young men o
keep in operating condition, the
currently active ships, aircraft,
and supporting bases of the Uni
teq States Fleet.
Fill The Fleet Week is desig
nated to provide replacement for
those who will leave the naval
service by reason of retirement,
expiration of enlistment, and
other attritional causesy \
The Navy now is facing a crit-|
ical personnel problem. Duringl
wartime, ninety-two percent of
its strength consisted of naval
reservists. With demobilization
anq return of most, reservists to
civilian life it became necessary
to accept short-term enlistments
in the regular Navy to fill the
gaps caused by rapid demobiliza
tion and still maintain the active
forces rvequired in support of
cdr national policy.
It is these enlistments that are
now expiring in large numbers
a total of 232,000 during the 1948
fiscal year—which creates the
urgent current neeq for recruifs
to maintain the Fleet at operating
strength.
Through local leaders, clubs,
and civie organizations, each citi
zen is being asked to give full
and active support to the achieve~
ment of the reeruiting program.
In Athens, many special activi
ties of Fill The Fleet Week wlll
be observed.
This is an excellent time for
planning a sweet potato produc
tion program for the year.

Do You know whether you've got what it takes when the
chips are down?
There's one good way to find out just how much of a
man you are. Enlist in the U. S. Army as a combat soldier.
That’s tops —the spearhead of the Army’s manpower.
~. The world’s best training for manhood is in the In
fantry, Artillery and Armored Cavalry. Once you've made
the grade in those hard-hitting services you'll knaw what
you've got. You'll have firm confidence in your own
abilities and resources, @
It’s a proud feeling to be able to say
“I'm a U. S. Army Soldier.” There's
no more honored title anywhere than
that. It stands for the finest fighting

School Lunch Here
To Cost More As
U. S. Subsidy Ends
| nouncement has been made
»byA?he City School Department
that prices for school lunches in
,EAthens have been increased due
to the elimination of the federal
' school lunch subsidy. The an
'nouncement follows: :
. “The ' Lunchroom Program lln
Ithe Athens Public Schools, as in
many other school systems of the ‘
country, has been partially fin
anced by a Federal subsidy and
through government surplus
commodities. The Federal sub
sidy of nine cents per lunch pre
scribed | expires the last of Feb
ruary. '
There has been no request by
the Federal Department of Ag
riculture to the United States
Congress to supplement the sub
sidy for the remainder of the
school year. Consequently there
has been a bill introduced in
Congress authorizing a supple
mental appropriation. As a re
sult of the withdrawal of the
Federal subsidy the price of
school lunches will advance in
Athens on March Ist from fif
ten cents to twenty cents in the
‘elementary schools and from fif
teen to twenty-five cents in the
Junior and Senior High Schools.
“The increased price in the
Junior and Senior Schools re
places the Federal subsidy and
the increased price in the ele
mentary schools replaces the
Federal subsidy only in part. The
same standard type of lunch
will be served through the re
mainder of the scheol year as has
been served up to this date.
“For any further "details par
ents are requested to contact the
principal of the schools which
their children attend.
“Wd have beer reliably informed
that the Federal subsidy for the
school year 1948-49 will be pre
sented to Congress sometime lat
er this spring. Those people who
are interested in seeing the sub
sidy continued are urged to con
tact their representatives in
Washington.”
Home-canned f ood products
are good travelers when well
packed. :

The work of a combat soldier isn’t easy or soft. But
it's vitally important to the peace and security of America.
There’s satisfaction in it. There’s good pay — better than
in most civilian jobs. There’s the opportunity for ex
cellent training in a wide variety of valuable trades and
skills. And there are other things money can’t buy —
such as rugged, clear-eyed health and the lasting com
