Official Historian, Clarke County
lsaac Powell, farmer and manufacturer, a member
of the directorate of the National Bank of Athens, was
Jll his life a successful farmer in this section of Geor
gia. He became a member of the Board of Directors on
Sept. 26, 1872 and served as such until his death,
March 20, 1882, a pericd of nearly ten years.
He was a man of great strength of character and
judgment and active intellect. His farming interests
were large and their management so successful that
the returns were very substantial. :
Mr. Powell was also very much interested in the
cotton mill business. A cotton mill had been built on
the Appalachee River at the town of High Shoals and
for many yéars Mr. Powell was the efficient president
of the High Shoals Manufacturing Company, building
up the business of that corporation to splendid size.
In this company the late Captain James White was
largely interested and for many years after the death
of Mr. Powell the High Shoals factory was under the
successful management of Captain John W. Hinton.
ke SR Lo :
The services of Mr. Powell as director of the
National Bank of Athens for ten years were those of
aman well-acquainted with the people whom the bank
served, with thorough knowledge of their needs and
of their responsibility in the assumption of bank loans,
50 that he became a very valuable member of the
Board of Directors.
He was the father of Tunis W. Powell, for many
years a leading farmer of the section and later on a
well-known citizen of Athens. One of his daughters
became the wife of james Frazier, a prominent citizen
of Oconee county, another was the wife of Rufus K.
Reaves, a leading Athens merchant, and another the
wife of William Henry Morton, a prosperous farmer
and leading citizen of Clarke county.
Next will appear the sketch of Henry L. Brittain.
