Ore year has passed-since that
sad day, , s
But to us it seems like' yester

your voice we loved 4s, still,
In our home your ‘plage is va

’And it never can bgf:fil_]:ed. :
i S W
Oh, dear Carson, without you
we're so lonely, .
As times it seems our hearts will
break;
put we know our Hevaenly
Father
Maketh never one mistake.
you were so kind and. good,
And proved your faith so true,
We know the love of Jesus
Was always biding in ‘you.
you had a loving dispgsition,
A warm true heart so dear, \
We know you are in Heaven
With Jesus, .
§till we love you, precious one,
To lose you brings us pain,
But we feel assured, dear Carson,
That our loss is Heaven’s gain.
Time is swiftly flying,
Life. for us will soon be over,
Then we will come so you in
glory,
Where we will dwell forever
more. i 3
Then once again, dear Carson,
We can clasp you to our breast,
And be with our Savior,
Where all is peace, joy and rest.

HAIL TO THE “HIKER”
On Monday, in the chamber of
the United States }{ott)xese of Rep}
resentatives, the liberation o
Cuba will be obwrve&éfi*jofl
session of the Congress. In Ha
vana will be held a similar
joint session of the Congress of
the Cuban Republic. The Pres
idents of both countries will pay
homage to “The Hiker,” the man
of 50 years ago who left his
home and loved ones to fight in
the first of this nation’s war for ‘
humanity, ‘
Fifty years ago the United
States went to war iwith the
Kingdom of Spain. A simple
statement, that, and one which
doubtless means little to this
generation, or even to the last,
because the Spain of today is
one of the smaller powers of the
world.
Many of the lesser historians
and writers have seen fit in late
years, since two vast world con
flicts have furnished added comns
parisons, to play down the Span
ish-American War as a “skir
mish"” or “little war,” and they |
have dimmed whatever luster
they may have possessed by dis- i
paraging the leadership of our
armed forces of 1898-1902. |
The truth is that.4he Spanish
monarchy in those days was one
of the leading nations on this
earth. It had the strength to con-

Mr. Leachmon died in a local
hospital Friday morning at 12:20
o’'clock after an illness of only a
few hours. He was 67 years old.
He is survived by seven daugh
ters, Mrs. Bennie Roberts, Thom
aston; Mrs. W. D. Elder, Eaton
ton; Mrs. H. ~D. Carson, High
Shoals, and 'Miss Ellie Mae
Leachmon, Mrs. Bob Durham,
‘Mrs. Early Griffeth and Mrs.
Ervin Moon, all of Farmington;
itwo sons, J. J. Leachmon, Farm

las, Ga.; one sister, Mrs. W. L.
Crawford, Dalton, Ga.; and one
brother, S. C. Leachmon, Madi
son.
~ Mr. Leachmon was a native of
Jackson county and for the past
fourteen years had live in Farm
‘ington, where he operated a store
and service station. He was a
‘member of the Baptist Church
and was well known throughout
‘this section.

THE BANNER-HERALD, ATHENS, GEORGIA
trol territories the world over.
It subjugated weaker peoples
with its intolerant, cruel and
ruthless despotism, and, when
America’s young manhood an
swered the call to arms and ad
ministered to it, in a little over
three months, a blistering defeat,
it conquered decisively a leader
country that has never since re
gained its prominence.
At the same time, these youth
ful Americans shaped the des
tiny of ‘their own land and
brought to it a dawn of leader
ship among nations.
It was a rugged individualist
who went into uniform without
duress and who brought riches to
his people. The war and cam=-
paigns cost a little over a bil
lion; he returned eight billions
in treasure. There came under
our flag Puerto Rica, Hawaii,
Guam and the Phillippine Arch
ipelago. The building of the Pan
ama Canal was made possible,
Diseases were conquered and
science was enriched.
The North and the South of
our own country were welded in
to one. The flag was left where
it was planted. The seas were
opened to free commerce. Our
United States assumed its right=
ful place in world councils and
there was established a golden
era in an industrialized nation
that became the envy of all peo
ples on earth. This was accom
plished by “The Hiker” who was
paid the magnificent sum of
$15.60 a month.
It is fitting that the Congress
at noon Monday, April 19, pay
tribute to the “Boys of ’9B” and
the truth be once more related
about these civilians who VOL
UNTEERED to a man to fight the
Spaniards; tell what manner of
people they were and what was
the effect of their sacrifices upon
world ‘events that have since
transpired. The exercises will be
broadcast, and will be of much
interest here since many Athens
and Clarke county men volun
teered for service in the war.
