The Sportsmen, popular sing
ing group, join Jack Smith in
singing “Big Brass Band from
Brazil” when they guest tonight
on the “Jack Smith Show” over
| WGAU-CBS at 7:15 p. m.
[' Popular Contralto Jeane Co
wan, baritone Sonny Calello and
comedian-accordionist Sasha Le
onoff compete for top honors on
the “Arthur Godfrey’s Talent
Scouts” broadcast this evening
at 8:30 p. m.
The night’s winner, selected
by studio audience applause, is
awarded a cash prize and three
engagements on Godfrey’'s day
time program, heard Monday
through-Friday at 11 a. m. |
Miss Cowan is a veteran net
work performer and has had her
own program on a Long Beach,
Calif., radio station. Calello is a
20-year-old Navy veteran who
at present is studying voice in
New York.
Leonoff has just returned from
a ten week engagement in Flor
ida.. He also has appeared at
Radio City Music Hall and sev
eral night spots in New York.
Hans Conreid, “Professop
Kropotkin” of “My Frienda ir-
ma,” heard Mondays at 10 p. m.
on WGAU-CBS, recently finish«
ed two RKO movie shorts in
which he played two very dif
ferent roles. In the dbcumentary
“Design for Death” he is the
Japanese narrator and he has a
comedy role in “Variety Time.”
CBS owned stations and affil
iates romped off with a total of
13 awards in the . First Local
Program Competition of the
trade publication “The Billboard”
In addition, “Hats Off” citations
went to five other programs air
ed over CBS owned stations and
affiliates.
WRFC’s “Reveille Round-up”
is a program of popular, western,
and hillbilly music with inter
spersed patter of the “early bird”
variety. Emcee Christian plays
the records, gives. the news,
weather baseball scores, and
anythiyy else pertinent ‘to the
time of &y. A3} th®s and he
never drops a uyllable! From six
to seven in the morning, it's
hard to beat.
One of this section’s most pop
ular quartets is on the air over
WRFC each week day morning
from 7:15 ’til 7:30. It’s the South- ,
ern Rythym Boys with a program,
of old time favorites—some re
ligious, some popular. |
Johnny Murray takes over the
9:30 a. m. program “Echoes from
Broadway” every morning Mon
day through Friday. This popu
lar announcer’s home is New
York City and much of his in
formation about the show tunes
come to him first hand from
Broadway critics, writers, and
producers. Featured with his
backstage sidelights are the old
hits of one-time favorite shows.
The WRFC novelty telephone
quiz “You Can’'t Say Hello” has
elicited much response from
Athens listeners. It seems that
should your phone ring between
10:15 and 10:30 on weekday it is
improper to say ‘“hello.” What
you should say is—well, listen in
and find out
Ronnie Stevens, radio special
ist for the Georgia Agricultural
Extension Service, will interview
one of the Extension specialists
in regard to the farm reconstruc
tion project that will take place
on May 12th. The farm chosen
for the project is the Carlyle-
Blakely farm just outside Win
der. Using over 100 power ma
‘chines, the Extension will see to
it that the farm has a complete
face lifting within 24 bpurs.
