Ipressed Jewish garrison - inside
| the walls appealed for help. He
‘idescribed the action as the fier
‘ciest in the five-day battle for
| Jerusalem.
| After daylight the Legion’s
battle against the Jewish troops
inside the walls was resumed.
Dynamite squads again blasted
'weatherbeaten stone tenements
packed around Beit Yaacov Syn
agogue, otherwise known as the
Hurva (Ruin). That synagogue is‘
| the chief remaining Jewis fortress
linside the walls.
| Giant holes gaped in all four

]lhe east where Jewish snipers
lhed kept on firing even after
| the Legionnaires entered.
| Heavy Arab firing also was
| heard in the Jewish districts of
modern Jerusalem.
‘ With Legionnaires before and
oehind them, the Jews inside
I;the walls crept through under
| ground passages and caverns to
ibri.ng ‘their maximum strength
' to bear against Arab attacks and
!'to avoid bombardments. Many
“ of the passages date from Roman
times and are as much as 70 feet
deep.
The possibility was seen that
the Jewish garrison eventually
might tunnel through the Turk
ish wall of the old citv and at
tempt to withdraw under cover
of darkness up the eastern slope
of Mount Zion to the safety of
TilE BANNER-HIERALD, ATIHENS, GEORGIA
' Jewish forward posts at Dormi

Such a tunnel also could be
used to bring supplies and am
munition t, the garrison which
has reduced its fire sharply ap
parently because it'is running
short of bullets. .

SWISS STORKS NEAR
EXTINCTION
ZURICH, Switzerland— (AP)
The stork is likely to become
non-existent in Switzerland, the
“Ornithological Observer” warns.
The periodical says there were
only eight nests in Switzerland
last season, and only five broads
resulted, with 20 young. One of
the babies was killed when it
came in contact with a high
voltage electric line. At Schlat
tingen, where a paid of storks
raised five young, other storks
attacked the family. One of the
aggressors was Kkilled in the
fight. ;
PAPAYA MAY SPICE
U. S. DIETS
HONOLULU.— (AP) —Pine
apple may have to move over on
the American table to make
room for another tasty dish
from Hawaii — papaya. A new
heat treatment which kills the
Oriental Fruit Fly makes papaya
eligible for sale on the mainland,
according to Dr. C. L. Ritchie,
Honolulu inspector for the U. S.
Department of Agriculture. Ex
porting the fruit from the islands
had previously been prohibited.
