COW VISITS
MATERNITY WARD
BESANCON, France.—(AP)—
A cow was the first thing to see
a newly born baby in a farm
here.
Mme. Madeleine Mesnie, the
wife of a farmer, was having a
baby in her room, which like
most farms in this department
was situated underneath the
cow’s stable.
Suddenly the ceiling collapsed
and one cow was found munch
ing near the baby’s cot. The
mother was covered with plaster
and so was the baby, but neither,
of them had been hurt.
According to the usual social
announcement, “the mother, the
baby . . . and the cow are all
well.”
BRITAIN WARS ON
POTATO BEETLES
LONDON.—(AP)—Britain has
enlisted thousands of agricultu
ral workers, students and volun
teers to destroy pests—identified
here as Colorado beetles—which
have threatened an invasion from
France and Belgium.
The battle to keep the beetles
from Britain is being waged on
the beaches, along the roads and
in the fields over an area of 30,-
000 acres from Folkstone, Kent,
to Guildford, Surrey, and along

the coast to Hull. A “beetle pa
trol” is watching for the insects
brought into ports in imported
vegetables or blown across the
Channel by winds from the con
tinent.
The Ministry of Agriculture
says it considers the “invasion”
the worst threat 1o Britain’s po
tato crop in ten years. Potato
fields are being sprayed with
lead arsenate and afterwards
with DDT, by thirty high-power
ed machines and thousands of
hand sprays. National Fire Serv
ice pumps are providing water
for the sprayers as they work
their way through the fields of
Kent, Essex, Suffolk, Norfolk
Lincolnshire.
“SIGN OF PEACE”
IN TURKEY
ISTANBUL.— (AP) —A fair
harbinger of peace in the world
has been noted by residents of
Izmit.
A stork and a dog, long ene
mies, now stroll side by side up
and down the streets of the city.
And while the dog sleeps, the
stork stands close guard and
picks fiim clean of insects.
“Never have we seen anything
like this,” said one old-timer.
“We want to think of it as an
omen for peace.”
