Collection At University !
Ten paintings from the famed
U. S. State Department collec
tion of contemporary American
art have been acquired for the
Eva Underhill Holbrook Memori
al Collection at the Wniversity of
Georgia, Alfred H. Holbrook,
curator, announced Tuesday,
bringing the total number of
paintings in the Holbrook Col
lection to over 200.
Obtained by the University
through the War Assets Admin
istration, the new acquisitions
include “Her Lover’s Return,”
Raymond Breinin; “Tenements,”
O. Louis Guglielmi; *“Wasteland
Images,” Julian Levi; “Life
guard,” Reginald Marsh; “Owl
on Rocks,” Everett Spruce;
“Choir Boys,” Nahum Tschacha
sov; “Bowery Follies,” Adolf
Dehn; “Color Mood,” DeHirsh
Margules; “The Cow,” Hans
Moller, and “The Clinic,” Ben

Parkinson believes people
shouldn’t stop learn:ng until they
stop breathing.
As an example of what she
means, Mrs. Parkinson at 60, has
just taken her f{ifth college de
gree from Mississippi State Col
lege for Women, of which her
hushand, Dr. Burney Lynch
Pu"kinson, is president, She says:

Mrs. Parkinson has been
preaching the gospel of education
throughout the South for four
cecades as lecturer, teacher, wri
ter and conductor of forums,
She taught in public schools of
North and South Carolina from
1906 to 1914, and at Chicora Ccl
lege, Furman University and
adult night schools between 1914
and 1927.
She wes a teacher in the first
night school for adults in South
Carolina, which her husband or
ganized at Laurens. Teachers and
lawyers gave their services to
conduct classes. The project was
credited with inspiring the first
appropriation for adult school
work in the state,
From 1930 to 1932, while her
husband was at the University of
Alaborps” she was gdirector of the
Alebzma Education Association.
While he was on the faculty of
the University of South Carolina,
she completed work on a doctor
ate in psychology and in 1928 be
came first woman to receive a
Ph.D. from that institution.
In the 16 years since her hus
band has been MSCW president

at the school, given lectures, con
ducted forums and led various
special study courses on the

In the fall of 1946, before the
collection was divided for ship
ment and exhibition abroad the
79 oils, grouped under the title
“Advancing American Art,”
were on view for one month at
the Metropolitan Museum of
Art. At that time, the paintings
received praise from leading
American art journals and cri
tics. In each of the European and
Latin American countries where
other exhibits from the complete
collection were held critical ver
dicts were also favorable.
