What County Official
Is Figurine Collector?
BY GEORGE ABNEY, JR. |
Hundreds have seen the dis
play, but there are many who
have not.
I'm talking about the 'dozens of
ascorted figurines that fill to
overflowing the flat-topped desk
in the office of Clarke County
Tax Collector Albert E, Davison.
If you happen to be one who
has not viewed the collection, it is
worth your time and a trip by the
county courthouse to do so.
“It’s fescinating,” is what Mr.
Davison said about his hobby
which is a collection of animal
ctatuettes.
He went on to say, “It tickles
me most when little kids come
in and enjoy the collection.”
Everyone of the 90 animals
meade of china, wood, and cther
materials were given to Mr. Da.
vison. He hasn’'t purchased even
cne. The collection is in his of
fice in the Court House,
The hobby was begun when he
found a little rubber dog when
he tore his former residence
down. The dog is 34 years old,
but Mr. Davison's collection was
started 10 vears ago on the find
ing of the dog. After bringing the
dog to his office dozens of people
who came into the office kidded
Mr. Davison about going back to
his second childhood. After that,
he received many statuettes from
Panama, Mexico, Cenada, China,
‘the state of New York and from
Washington, D. C., besides >thers
from around this area. He also
has some from Savannah and
Rome. -
He has received a few from
people through the mail that
aidn’t even carry the name of
the giver.
The smallest animal in his col
lection—which is mostly of dogs
and some other animals such as
elephants — is a goat from Mex
ico. The goat is about half an
inch long and is less than that
in height :
Largest in the collection is a
dog made of chinaware. It is
well over a foot long.
One particular animal Mr. Da
vison is especially proud of is a
dog given him by the late Miss
Jennie Smith, who taught art at
Lucy Cobb Institute. She gave
this dog, which she had used as a
model for 50 years, to him about
five years ago.

Mr. Davison pointed out that
his collection is only a modest
one and there must be many
other Athenians that have larger
or more impressive collections or
other hobbies. ,
