CHRISTIAN SCIENCE
LESSON-SERMON
Christian Science services are
held Sunday mornings at 11 a.
m. and testimony meetings on the
first Wednesday of each month
at 8 p. m., at Screven Avenue
and Cherokee Drive. The pukiic
is cordially invited,
~ The subject of the Lesson-
Sermon which will be read in
Churches of Christ, Scientist,
throughout the world, on Sunday,
August 8, is ‘Spirit.”
Among the citations which
comprise the Lessopi-Sermon is
the following from the Bible:
“Who hath directed the Spirit of
the Lord, or being his counsetlor
hath taugfyt him?” (Isaiah
40:13).
* The Lesson-Sermon also in
cludes the following passage from
the Christian Science taxtbook,
“Science and Health with Key to
the Scriptures” by Mary Baker
Eddy: “The Scriptures imply that
God is AX-in-all. The Scriptures
#'so declare that God is Spirit.
He is all-inclusive, and is reflec
ted by all that is real and eternal
and by nothing ase He fills all
space, and it is impossible to con
ceive of such omnipresence and
individuality excent as infinite
Spirit or Mind. Hence all is Spirit
snd spiritual.” (Page 331).

Guadalecanal Battle Lifted
Morale Of Depressed America
Of all the battles of World
War 11, the one that began jus
six years ago on August 7, on ¢
little known island in the British
Solomons, did more to tift the
morale of the American people
from the depths of defeat to thc
heights of victory than any o.
the later engagements.
On the morning of August 7,
1942, units of the First Marine
Division (Reinforced), wadec
ashore on the Pacific island of
Guadalcanal, beginning she. first
land offensive by United States
forces in & war eight months old
—and marked by a series of de
feats from an enemy whose sav
agery the won'd had not witness
ed since the days of the barbarian
and Mongul invasions.
Seizure a “Must”
Menacing the supply routes
between the United States, New
iZealand and Australia, the Jap
‘garrison in the Solomons prepar
ed feverishly for an invasion of
‘the two “down-under” countries,
‘and made the. seizure of these is
lands by allied forces a “must”
on the invasion lists, The almost-‘
completed airfield dn Guadalca
nal — to be named for Major“
Lofton R. Henderson, Marine air
hero of the Midway battle — was‘
to become the strategic prize that
both sides would struggle so fier
cely for,
Under the commuand of Major
General Arexander A. Vander
grift, later Commandant of the
Marine Corps, the First Marine
Division began its four-month
campaign to sieze the islands of
Guadalcanal, Tulagi, Gavutu,
and Tanambogo. These men, who
were to be the guinea pigs in
testing American equiment, tac
tics, and stamina, while f{ighting
in the humid jungles of the Solo
mons, were to continue their bat
fre history for three long years.
Firing the first offensive shots on
“the ’Canal,” they were locked
in morta’ combat with the Japs
in the last battle of the war, on
Okinawa.
Okinawa In 45
As Okinawa was to be in 1945,
Guadalcanal was at first an aesy
target. But, again' like Okinawa,
heavy opposition was not long in
presenting itself, The surrise of
the attack found the enemy un
prepared. But before the First
Marine Division left, it was to
suffer heavy battle casualties—
plus those that fell to malaria.
The casualty rate was raised by
jthe fierce registance from ‘the
first on Tulagi, Cavutu and Tan
ambogo. g
The worid awaited the outcome,
The “show” was truly a land, sea
and air operation. The Navy

fought desperately to keep the
ine of supply open and the Jap
varships at a safe distance. But
‘he Marines’ fight to hold Hen
ierson Field, in order to gain air
superiority, was still made more
difficit by frequent ‘shelling
from enemy war craft.
Meanwhile, the Japs threw
heavy infantry counterattacks
against the Leathernecks.' This,
together with enemy air attacks
and the natural fight against the
peat, insects and jungle vegeta
‘ion, made Guadalcanal a night
mare. The Marines not only held
on, but continued to advance and
turn their attack into -America’s
first land victory.
Mid-Ocotc)rer and early No
vember brought leinforcements
by Army and Marine units. By
mid-December the First Marine
Division was allé to be relieved
after four months of fighting un
der the most trying conditions.
Guadalcanal — site of the first
land offensive in World War 11,
and also the training site of some
of the units that participated in
the last offensive at Okinawa—
was, to quote General George C.
Marshal', then Chief of Staff of
the Army, “the turning point in
the Pacific!”
