ing employment in the Athens
area is the lowest since the end
of the war, reported W. W. De-

ment Service of the Georgia De
partment of ‘Labor affiliated with
the United States Employment
Service. .
NT. Deßeaugrine gave the
count on August 1 as 1,288. Veter
ans numbered 530, female non
vets numbered 572, and there
were 186 male non-vets listed.
“Labor employment conditions
in the Athens area are good to
day following the month of July,
which was one of the best in
our history,” stated Mr. Deßeau
grine.
"~ The local office serves ten
counties, Clarke and nine sur
rounding counties.
There was a total of 340 place
ments during July in profes
sional, clerical and sales, service,
skill, semi-skill, and un-skill
trades. The placements were
made primarily in 12 industries
which included construction,
manufacturing and foods, tex
tile, apparel, lumber, printing
and publishing, public utilities,
wholesale and retail trades, serv-

with the burning of two colored
churches and & coiored school
l building at Loganvile late last
| Fall will go on trial Monday, Au
! gust 23, when the criminal docket
| of Wiiton Superior Court begins.
Walton Superior Court opens
Mongey, but the criminal docket
| is brought up the following Mon
| day. Judge Henry West will pre
side over the court and prosecut
ing for the State will be Marsha'l
Pollock, solicitor general.
Grimes was indicted .at the
February term of the Walton
Grand Jury,
Dan Duke and A. T. Walton,
Atianta lawyers = representing
Grimes, filed a challenge to the
indictment and trial on the
grounds that negroes had been
exauded from the jury box.
Judge West ruled Jhat. the chal
lenige for the inclusion of ne
groes in the Grand Jury box was
too late, but upheld the challange
for the names of negroes to be
placed in the Traverse Jury box.

The trial was postponed ‘until
August term so that the list
could be revised. Negroes are now
included in the Traverse = Jury
box. The. serving of negroes on
<weeg durineg this term is depend
ent -on,- whether any .are drawn
from the box, or excused..
