Film Expert Predicts
Mustache Back In Vogue
By 808 THOMAS
- HOLLYWOOD, Nov. 5—(AP)—
The Mustache may have been de
feated at the polls, but a Holly
wood expert says it’s on the up
swing with the U. S. male.
“Mustaches are definitely gain
ing in popularity,” reports Uni
versal-International makeup chief
Buddy Westmore, But he warns
that not all men should wear
them,
~ “The trouble with men is that
‘they try to copy someone else's
mustache when they don’t have
the right physique or face for it,”
said brughless Buddy.
And don’t get the idea a mus
tache will make you look more
virile. “Hair hasn’t got a thing to
do with wvirility,” the makeup man
explained.
Before you start adding any up
per-lip fungus, you'd better stu
dy Westmore’s 10 rules for mus
taches:
1. Short men should avoid them
or they'll look shorter,
2, Square-jawed men shouldn’t
wear short, thin ones.
3, Long, narrow-faced men
shouldn’t grow ’em wide or let
’em droop. “Drooping* creates an
illusion of unhappiness.”
4. A wide mustache ' for
round-faced.
5. Men with long upper lips
should wear them.
6. Blonde men should avoid
them unless they have heavy
beards. “Or they can darken their
light mustaches with the wife’s
eyebrow pencil,
7. It’s all right if hair and mus
tache color don’t match.
8. A mustache leoks incongru
ous on a bald man. “It seems to
me they're just trying to prove
they can grow hair some place.
9. Beware! A mustache adds age.
10. Keep it trimmed and neat to
derive any benefit.
I have asked a numbetr of film
personalities for their opinion on
the mustache issue. Here are their
replies:
Lizabeth Scott: “I think they’re
hideous. They tickle.”
Dinah Shore: “Yes, they tickle,
but it’s worth it. They make men
look so romantic.”
Victor Mature: “I never went
for one. I figure it must be tough
on the wife or girl friend. If you
like to smooch, the poor girl would
have a raw upper lip.”
Melvyn Douglas: “When Gold
wyn brought me out here, he made
me grow one because he said.it
would add to my sex appeal.
After 15 years I've gotten used
‘to"it and I'd feel naked without
it
Eddie Cantor: “They’re not for
me. I wouldn’t want anything to
detract from my eyes.”
Ella Raines: “I don’t like them.
