Georgia fans in the Classic City began to make plans for a
bowl! trip.on January 1 as the Bulldogs rolled on toward a possi
bie Southeastern Conference championship, slipping by a sur
prisingly stubborn Florida eleven in Jacksonville Saturday, 20-
e
Playing before a record crowd in Gator Bowl stadium, the
Red and Black team copped its sixth victory against one loss
to take over the conference number one spot as Tennessee
dumped Tech in Atlanta. ) 2
GUY TILLER of the Atlanta Journal penned, “The Bulldogs
got their hands singed when they grabbed hold of a sizzling
Florida team, and it was a ding-dong battle for 57 minutes before
Georgia %d it away.”

F. M. WILLIAMS reported in the Atlanta Constitution, “It
was a slam-bang battle, with no odds given or asked. Georgia
y WOr'L it because they had the most guns and the best passing at
tack. :
FLORIDA COACH Ray “‘Bear’” Wolf seemed well-pleased
with the play of his squad. “‘Georgia’s manpower was too much
for us,” he commented. :
COACH WALLY BUTTS was lavishiin his praise of sophomore
halfback Billy Mixon. ‘‘He ran great. You'll ‘be seeing more of
~ him in every game.”’
Mixon’s play put the Bulldogs within striking distance of the
game-icing touchdown with last frame runs of 30 and 20 yards,
placing his rushing total for the day at 67 yards in seven cracks
at the Gator forewall. Joe Geri, as usual, was all over the field

PORTER PAYNE,
Georgie Guard
with his brilliant running, pass receiving, and punting. He scored
one touchdown with a 12-yard thrust and kicked two extra
points to run his scoring total to 60 points, highest in the con
ference. :
Star up front was Porter Payne, who bids fair for an all-con
ference tackle berth..He stalled a first-period Cator drive on the
Georgia 25 almost single-handed, setting the stage for the first
Bulldog touchdown march. _'
Happy to have Florida tilt behind him, Butts brings his charges
home this week to prep for Saturday’s fray with Auburn in Co
lumbus. The Bulldogs get Furman here the following week, but
don’t be surprised if the Red and Black begins pointing for that
Nov. 27 Tech game right away. The conference title and a bowl
bid will probably depend upon the outcome.
