Feeling IsOtten
A Warning
That The Red-Blood -
Is Getting Low
1f you do not feel like your real self, do
not have the urge to be up and doing,
why not check-up on your blood
strength? Look at the palms of your
hands, your fingernails, your lips, the
lobes of your ears—are they pale and off
color?
Every day—every hour—millions of
tiny red-blood-cells must pour forth
{from the. marrow of your bones to re
place those that are worn-out. A low
blood count may affect you in several
ways: no appetite, underweight, no
energy, a run-down condition, lack of
resistance to infection and disease.
To get real relief you must keep up
your blood strength. Medical authorities,
by analysis of the blood, have by posi
tive proof shown that BSS Tonic is
amazingly effective in building up low
blood strength in non-organic nutri
tional anemia. This is due to the SSS
Tonic formula which contains special
and potent activating ingredients.
Also, SSS Tonic helps you enjoy the
food you eat by increasing the gastric
digestive juice when it is non-organi
cally too little or scanty—thus the stom
ach will have little cause to get balky
with gas, bloat and give off that sour
food taste.
w Don’t wait! Energize your body with
rich, red-blood. Start on SSS Tonic now.
As vigorous blood surges throughout
your whole body, greater freshness and
strength should make you eat better,
sleep better, feel better, work better,
play better, have a healthy color glow in
your skin—firm flesh #ill out hollow
places. Millions of botfles sold. Get a
bottle from your drug store. SSS Tonic
helps Build Sturdy Health.

He took it out and gave it to
her, after they had entered the sit
ting room from the dining room,
and settled themselves there, she
acrois the lamplit table from him.
“This came for you today. I open
ed it by mistake, not noticing, I |
hoge you'll forgive me.”
he took the whole envelopl
first, and stuided it a seeond, this
way and that. “Who’s it from?”
she said.
“Can’t you tell?”
Just as he was about to won
der why the script in itself did not
tell her that, she had already
withdrawn its contents and open
ed them, and murmured “Oh,” so ;
the question never had a chance to
form itself in his mind. |
She read it rather quickly, even |
hurriedly, her head moving with
each line, then back again, in con
tinuous serried little twichings.
Then reached the botton and had |
done. |
He thought he saw- remorse on |
‘her face, in its sudden, still ab
straction. ’
' “She says—" She half-tendered
Iti to him. “Did you read it?”
. “Yes, I did,” he said, slightly
uncomfortable.
- She put it back in the envelop,
gave the latter two taps where its
seam was broken.
He looked at her fondly, to soft
en the insistence of his appea.
“Write to her, Julia,” he urged.
“That is not like you at all.”
“I will,” she promised contrite
ly. “Ohl' I will, Louis.”
“Well, then, come. There’s no |
time like the .pre*sen’rt.
He took her by both hands and
had to draw her to her feet. And
though eshe made no active sign of
resistance, he cold feel the weight
of her body against the direction
of his pull.
He had to go to the desk and
lower the writing - slab. He had
to draw out a sheet of fresh note
paper from the rack, and put it in
place for her.
He had to go back and bring her
over, from where she stood, bu !
the hand. Then even when he had ‘
her seated, he had to dip the pen
and place it in her very nfingers.'
He gave her head a pat. “You are
like a stubborn child that doesn’tl
want to do its lessons,” he told her
humorously.
She tried to smile, but the effect
was dubious at best.
“Let me see her letter a mo
ment,” she said at last. ‘
He went back to the table,
brought it to her. But she seemed }
only to glance at the very top line !
of the page, almost as if referring !
to the mode of address in order to
be able to duplicate it. |
Then turning from it immedi
ately after that one quick look; she
wrote on her own blank sheet,
“My own dear Bertha:” He could
see it form, over her shoulder. Be
yound that she seemed to have no
further use for the original, edged
it slightly aside and didnst con
cern herself with it any further.
He Jet her be. He returned to
his own chair, took up his news
paper onte more. But the stream
of her thoughts did not seem to
flow easily. He would hear the
scrateh of her pen for a few words,
then it would stop, die awa Yy,
there would be a long wait. Then
it would scratch for a few jerky

At length he heard her gjg'e a
great sigh, but one more of short
patienced aversion continusing
even after a task has been comple
ted than of relief af.its conclu=
sion, and the scratching of the pen
had stopped for good. She flung it
down, as if annoyed.
“'l’ve done. Do you want to read
it??
“No,” he said, “it's between sis
ter and ssister, not for a husband
to read.” 3 Finiy ot
“Very well,” she said negligent
ly. She passed her pink tongue
around the gummed edege of the
envelope, sealed it in. She stood
it upright against the irside of the
desk, prepared to close the slab
over it. “I'll have Aunt Sarah post
it for me in the mormning.”
He had reached for it and pick
ed it up before her hands could
forestall him, though they both
flew out toward it just a moment
too late. She hadn’t expected him
to be standing there beiind her.
He slid it into his inside breast
pocket, buttoned his coat over it.
“I can do it for you rnyself,” he
said. “I leave the house carlier,
It'll be that much sooner on its
way.”
He sew a stratled expression, al
most of trapped fear, cause her
eyes to dodge cornerwise for an
instant, but then they evened
again so quickly he told himself
he must have been mistaken, he
must not have seen it at all.
The next he looked she was
stroking the edge of her fingers
with a bit of chamois penwiper,
against potential rather than ac
taul spots, however, and that
seemed to be her sole remaining
concern as the moment thou;ih
she puckered her brows pensively
over the task.
