French Respect U.N.-But
Can’t Resist Gentle Gibe
BY ROSETTE HARGROVE
NEA Staff Correspondent
PARIS—(AP)—The little peo
ple of France are fully aware of
the importance of the UN and its
goal of world peace, but they can’t
seem to resist trédting the state
within a state, where the UN is
meeting in, Paris, with their in
herent irreverence.
The irreverence is evident in a
mixture of apathy and gentle
ridicule towarg the activities and
inhabitants of “Onusia,” the tem
porary title for. the Palais. de
Chaillot, current home at the UN.
The French press, both daily
and weekly, has poked fun at the
tons of paper used and the mill
ions of words written every day
within “Onusia’s” extra - terri=
torial borders. It has made jokes
about& translators cqu}’ble of say
ing “I love you” .in 25 languages,
and about the 80 sworn-in chars
women who empty the waste bas
kets and, it is rumored, have sold
Secretary Marshall’s doodling for
500 francs aplece. ‘
There have: been = comments
about the lack of chic, by Parisian
standards, of the seven women
delegates and the.army of femin
ine secrefaries, typists and trans
lators attached to the delegations.
In the smart salons of the
privileged. classes, of coursé, the
UN is a top conversation piece,
with hosteses eager to entertain
delegates and their entourages.
Passes to attend Security Coun
cil' or General %seMly meetings
are eagerly sought after, if only
to be able to say one heard Vi
shinsky speak and to mingle with
celebrities. \
But among the little French
men, the big concern is the threat
of internal conflict, the strikes,
and the cost of living.
Even though the UN has been
in session since Sept. 21 many
people do not know there are 300
seats available to the public on
the simple . presentation of an
identity card.
Mlle. Genevieve Tissot, in
charge of that department, points
out that while there were many
more applicatnts than seats avail
ble the first week or so, today she
seldom has to turn anyone away.
“If UN did not exist it would
have to be invented” is the opin
ion of well-informed Frenchmen,
although many are inclined to be
skeptical. If the French appear
apathetic these informed French
men add, it is mainly because re
sults so far have been unspectac
ular, and so far as popular appeal
goes, there are no ‘“‘star turns” at
UN, no orators like Aristide Bri~
and and Georges Clemenceau.
Talk to the French man-in-the
street about UN and he will ex
press very much' the same
thoughts. A taxi driver, for exam
ple, said: “I hope they will suc
ceed in ensuing world peace. But
what I am most enxious to see is
a st,able governmen in this coun
try.”
Othgflobfmm.- here say that
the little: Pleople of France have
tremendous confidence in the
superiority and might of the U. S.
and American leadership in world
affairs. The Berlin incident has
bee; the best propaganda for the
U. S.
