Bozo Has Neat .840 Percentage;
Picks Georgia, Tech, Tennessee
By BOZO CLODFELLER 111 (Esquire)
This covner only iissed three games out of 27 last
week, and expectation are high from here on out; the
season may be a success on paper, anyway, even if it
isn’t financially. I always spot too many points. ’
(Editor’s Note: The Banner-Herald now proudly presents Mr,
Bozo Clodfeller's weekly fqotball predictions. Hailed as the na
tion’s top Football Forecaster, Clodfeller goes into battle this
week with a terrific .840 percentage, compiled on 167 games picked
gorrectly, 32 wrong, and six ties.)
I've been working so hard on my All-America selections (to be
printed on Wednesday), that I haven’t spent too much time on this
week’s card. But being the genius I am, there shouldn®t be much to
it. You can still place your bets according to my pickings. And al
ways remember me if you win. And if you lose . . . well, you have my
sympathy.
~ THE STATE schools, Tech and Georgia, are playing a pair of so
called breathers this week. Everyone, including Tech and Georgia, are
looking to next week when the two schools tangle here on the local
gridiron.
I know you're anxious to read my dope so you can play your par
lay, so here goes. ”
GEORGIA OVER FURMAN - The Bulldogs have injuries to
several key men, but that shouldn’t stop them in this one. If Furman
had been an early-season opponent, there might be room for worry,
but the Georgians are too well planted at this staie of the schedule.
Furman may put on a good show, though, and the game should be
worth seeing, to say the least. GEORGIA 42, FURMAN 6.
Teeh Over Citadel — Tech, losers of two in a row, should get back
into the winning column in this one. The Jackets may be a little off
center, but the Citadel doesn’t have the goods to stop the Atlanta club.
By a large score.
Alabama Over LSU — Alabama seems to be rolling, just like
the “Tide”. Louisiana State should have a good game left in
them, but it may be against Tulane a week hence. Perhaps not
at all. But Alabama should take this one by three touchdowns,
maybe more. »
TENNESSEE OVER KENTUCKY — Bob Neyland’s Volunteers
lost a close one last week to Mississippi (a victory I predicted), and
will bounce back to take this one. A close affair.
Vanderbilt Over Maryland — In my opinion Vanderbilt is one of
the top teams in the SEC today. They have come a long way since the
ginning of the season and are a top-flight ball club at the present.
laryland, with their tricky split-T, can be trouble, but the Com
modores have the power to come out on top.
. Tulane Over Cincinnati — Another victim for the strong Greenies.
Fullback Eddie Price should have a field day.
Yale Over Harvard — Ole Eli has been up, and they have been
down (the latter for the most part), but with their big colored
~halfback, Evi Jackson, may gel back into the running against the
Big Red. A nip-and-tuck vattle, with the decision likely to go the
other way. We're just hoping.
Arkansas Over Tulsa — The Razorback’s are the hard-luck club
of the Southwest. They have played good ball all year, but just
lack that certain something that means the difference between victory
and defeat. Last week they had a win against SMU yntil the last play
of the game, when Gil Johnson completed a scoring toss for a 14-12
decision. Tulsa will be facing a team with revenge in their hearts.
* MICHIGAN OVER OHIO STATE — Michigan closes its season
against the Buckeyes, and they should make it a clean sweep for the
second straight year. State has shown up well this year, but Michigan
will be another matter. A win in a walk.
HERE AND THERE — SMU over Baylor, California over Stan
ford, Columbia over Syracuse, Dartmouth over Princeton, North
firolina ovar Duke, Northwestern over Illinois, Penn State over
Pittsburgh, Rice over TCU, Texas Tech over New Mexico, Southern
California over UCLA, William and Mary over North Carolina State,
and Boston College over St. Mary’s.

Athens High's Trojans departed early this afternoon on
their last long road trip of the 1948 season — a hop of
better than 100 miles that will carry them over into Bar

“Coaches Reid Moseley and Lou
Blanton will send their split-T
operators into the Trojans' ninth
grid battle of the season tonight
jgeking their fourth win, as
ginst their sixth loss. The Tro

the backfield will most likely not

get the first calls.
The lina will be hampered by
the absence of Herb ie Swartz,
first string guarda, not likely to
make the trip, who'll be replaced
by Harris Simpson or Elliott
Smith. Simpson, Smith, and Pat
Bowden are likely to carry the
ball at guard. Monk Collins,
Frank Fabris, and Don Seagraves
will man the tackle slots, if Collins
is not switched over to guard.
Center will be handled by Frank
Eberhart, jarring line backer, and
Pat Bowden, combo guard and
center.
John Marshall, reliable pass re

action at end. Marvin Pilgram
and Warren Thurmond will be on

An estimated crowd of 20,000 is expected to be on hand
tomorrow afternoon at 2:50 when Georgia and Furman

With George and Hobbs out, the

Furman, 13-7 losers to the Bull

ball game with victories over
Washington and Lee, Richmond
and the Citadel. They have lost to
South Carolina, Florida and Clem

the season with Davison College.
Georgia is being rated a six

SANTA CLARA, C[ilif,
Nov. 19—(AP)—Santa Clara’s
Broncos have been invited to
meet Wake Forest in the Dixie
Bowl at Birmingham, Ala.,
New Year’s Day, Coach Len
Casanova said today.
The Santa Clara Athletic
Board voted not to act on th
bid until after the last footbafi
game of the regular season
Nov. 27 against Michigan
State in San Francisco.
Santa Clara has won seven
out of nine games this fall,
losing only to California and
Southern Methodist.
Casanova said he was not
sure whether the invitation to
the Dixie Bowl was contingent
on the Broncos’ defeating
Michigan State.

In Paul Stombaugh Furman has
one of the best punters iin the
country, He is fifth in the mation
in that department, possessing a
43.1 average garnered on 57 kicks
in seven games. As a team, Fur
man ranks third in the nation in
punting.
And there is Tom Wham, a big

are thrown by George Pruitt, a

the site of the Hurricane school. It
was Pruitt’s passes last year that
almost spelled defeat for Georgia.
Captain George Byrd
In the line George Byrd, the
Furman captain, is a standout. Be
sides being a good blocker on of

Georgia will counter with its
one-two offensive punch of John

in good shape and ready for battle.
However, neither will see much
action if the Bulldogs obtain a
comfortable lead, especially Rauch,
whom Coach Butts wants in good
shape for the Tech game here
next week.

Vanderbilt - Maryland
@
Top Game In Section
‘ATLANTA, Nov. 19.— (AP) —Six Southeatsern Con
ference teams this week have their hands full and pos
sibly overloaded while the other six will be building up to
a big climax for November 27.
For the second consecutive week
the State of Tennessee supplies
‘the top game in the southeast —
Vanderbilt vs. Maryland in Nash
ville. Last week it was the Miss
issippi-Tenessee thriller won by
‘the Rebels 16-13 in Memphis.
Vandy and Tulane have been
in a dead heat since Oct. 16 to see
which is the most improved team
in the Southeastern. This week’s
meeting with Maryland can do a
lot for or against the Commodores.
Maryland has won six and lost by
only one point to Duke before
dropping last week’s game to the
North Carolina Tar Heels, 49-20.
The Commodores are the high
est scorers in the Southeastern —
233 points for and only 61 against.
Two games involving Southeast
ern teams push Vandy-Maryland
as the game of the day. Alabama
goes to Baton Rouge as a multi
touchdown favoriate over L. S. U.,,
and the Tennessee Vols play the
second division Kentucky Wild
cats at Knoxville.
Florida vs. Miami
The sixth team with a big job
ahead in Floriad which plays its
old state rival, Miami. Gainesville
has the game this year and pick
ing a favorite is guesswork. The
Gators are third from the bottom
of the SEC but on occasion have
shown a powerful offensive head
ed by one of the best runners in
Dixie — Chuck Hunsinger.
Three remaining games are ex
pected to be stiff workouts for
Georgia, Tech and Tulane.
Tulane makes one of its few
trips of the year to play the Uni
versity of Cincinnati in Ohio.
Georgia is at home for'the first
time in six weeks in a game
against Furman; the Citadel of
Charleston, S. C., coached by
Quinn Decker, and old friend of
Tech’s Bobby Dodd, will be in At-
TWOY.M.C. A.
Invading Athens tonight
will be the Fritz Orr Club
football aggregation who will
play the Athens Y. M. C, A.
gridsters starting at 7 o’clock.
The team will clash on the
“Y” athletic field.
The local Prep Scorpion
team will definitely play
Fritz Orr in a game for boys
12 years old and under and
probably the local Cub class
team will play the Atlanta
team’s 10 year old and under
team. Athens won from both
teams in Atlanta recently.
Physical Director Cobern
Kelley invites the public to
attend these games tonight.
He says they will be thrillers.
No Cub classes will be held
tomorrow morning, but all
Cubs will report to the “Yy”
at noon and go from there to
Sanford Stadium where they
will play before the Geergia-
Furman game,
lanta against the Yellow Jacket.
Auburn, Mississippi and Miss
issippi State are idle.
After this week’s games the sea
son will be in its highest gear. On
Nov. 27 this is the slate: Tech-
Georgia in Athens; Alabama-Flor
ida in Tuscaloosa; Auburn-unbeat
en Clemson in Moblie; L. S. U.
and Tennessee-Vandy in ‘Nash
ville. The night of Nov. 26 Ken
tucky meets Miami in Miami.

S.M.U., Wildcats
After 'Big" Wins
NEW YORK, Nov. 19. — (AP) — Two of the richest
New Year’s Day bowl prizes are up for grabs tomorrow,
and the chances are that the Northwestern Wildcats and
the Southern Methodist Mustangs will stow them away.
The Wildcats need only to wal
lop oft-beaten Illinois at Evans
ton to assure their selection from
the Big Nine Conference for the
Rose Bowl classic.
Southern Methodist, leading the
Southwest Conference with four
straight victories, can just about
clinch the job of host team in the
Cotton Bowl by thumping Baylor
at Dallas.
If either the Wildcats or Mus
tangs lose, then the bowl situation
could become very complicated
over the weekend. But they both
figure to win.
Things are not so simple out on
the Pacific Coast, where California
and Oregon are at daggers point.
Each wants to play host in the
Rose Bowl, and prospects are that
it will have to be decided by a
vote of conference members.
Oregon, Bears Favored
Oregon, with- a 6-0 conference
record, plays its final game at
Oregon State tomorrow and is fav
ored to win. California, with 3 5-0
conference standing, winds up:
against Stanford at Berkiey anu
should win handily.
~ Another game in which a bowl
bid, as well as a conference title,
probably will be at stake is the
