Schumann’s Music
Music Appreciation
As Robert Schumann’s music
was performed on the Music Ap
preciation program Thursday we
glimpsed a more complete ex
pression of the romantic spirit by
this composer in the illustrations
offered through chamber music,
piano, and song forms.
Hugh Hodgson (piano,) Robert
Harrison and Frances Thevenin
(violins,) Mary Quigley (viola,)
and Rudolph Kratina (’cello,) gave
an impressive reading of the first
two movements of Opus 44 (Pia
no Quintet in E flat,)
From Opus 12 (Fantasiestucke)
Mr. Hodgson played three pieces—
“Warum” being an example of
free intermingling of melodic lines;
and variety of rhythm, another
remarkable feature of Schumann’s
music;_»‘lv thought, was especially‘
evident in “Soaring.”
As a songwriter, Schubert’s
achievements served Schumann as
a model, though he was no mere
imitator, “Mondnacht,” “Die Rose,
Die Lilie, Die Taube,” “Du bist
wie eine Blume,” and “Fruhlings
nacht” were beautifully illustrated
by Byron Warner, with the former
and the latter composttions show
ing to what height the composer’s
fancy could rise when stimulated
by a thoroughly congenial subject.
Billy 'Schattenh, guest pianist
from Atlanta, concluded this pro
gram brilliantly with his playing
of Concerto in A minor for Piano.
Talented pupil of Hugh Hodgson,
Mr. Schatten has delighted music
appreciation audiences almost an
nually for four or five years'with
his remarkable ability. Maturity
and response to great teaching
{could be observed throughout. The
first moveemnt of this Concerto
was composed in 1841, the year
following Schumann’s marriage;
the second, Intermezzo, and the
Finale were composed in 1845. Dr.
Daniel Gregory Mason, one of
America’s foremost composers and
scholars says of the Concerto:
“the themes are inspired. Treat
ment of both pianoforte and or
chestra leaves nothing to be de
sired, either when the one is set
against the other or when both are
intimately blended. It is perfectly
suited to the piano.” The orches
tral part was played by Hugh
Hodgson. 2
