® IDEAS CAN CONTROL ATOMIC BOMBS
Sunday School Lesson
Bv ROY L. SMITH
There is not a serious scientist
on earth who does not wait with
a certain terror in his soul, to see
what humanity is going to do with
the atomic bomb.
A famous physicist who had had
much to do with the fabrication of
the first atomic bomb, sat slumped
down behind his desk in his labo
ratory in conversation with a
preacher. It was quite apparent
from his comment that he was in
the grip of a great terror. Sudden
ly he leaned forward, his hands
clutched together, and half cried
out: “My God, doctor, what have
we let loose upon the world?”
With that he launched out on a
vivid description of the awful
capacities of the atomic bomb for
destruction, and finally said: “You
preachers have the answer. You
will have to let loose into this
world ideas that are big enough
and powerful enough to control
this thing, for nothing less than
an idea will do it.”
The Power of an Idea
No one has yet been able to es
timate the power of an idea. We
have watched some work, and we

have stood trembling at the sight
of the transformations some of
them have worked.
We have watched, for instance,
while communism has taken whole
nations captive without firing a
shot. We have seen an idea upset
a dynasty and overthrow an eco
nomic system that had stood for a
thousand years. We have seen the
balance of power shift under the
impact of an idea, and we have
watched while civilization took a
turn in an entirely new direction.
Communism and Consecration
The amazing success of com
munism is taking half of the world
captive during the last twenty
five years can be explained in on
ly one way. Communists have con
secrated themselves to commun
ism. .
808 THOMAS SAYS:
Consider The Straight
Man Like Bud Abbott
HOLLYWOOQOD, Nov. 24—(AP)
—lt's. Bud Abbott’s lament: con
sider the plight of the straight
man.
Lou Costello is the more prom
inent member of the Abbott and
Costello team, in more ways than
one. All eyes are on the Pudgy
comic, and he’s the one that draws
the laughs. But where would he
be without Abbott
“ Lou is the funniest man in the
world,” admits Bud, “when he
wants to be.” Maning: when Bud
is “feeding” him.
Feeding is a special craft in
show business. A feeder is the
mug who tosses straight lines to
the comics. Amos feeds Andy;

If it could have happened that
Christians had consecrated them
selves to the principles of Jesus of
Nazareth, as Communists have
consecrated themselves to the
principles of Karl Marx, who can
estimate what this world might
have come to be?
Principles in Parables
At one point in his ministry, as
though he had grown discouraged
over trying to make himself plain
through heavy speech, Jesus turn
ed to telling parables. In a series
of short, simple, little tales he set
forth a series of principles by
‘which he proposed to start a new
‘way of life among men.
| The Sunday School lesson
for November 28: “Parables
in the Bible,” Isaiah 5:1-7;
Matthew 13.:31-33, 44-46;
Luke 10:25-37; 15:3-32.
In an effort to prepare the way
for peace he told the story of the
Good Samaritan with its graphic
lesson in neighborliness. In his
story of the last sheep he describ
ed the persistent love of God for
man. In the story of the yeast in
the dough he undertcck {c show
how explosive and transforming
an idea might be.
~ Just Suppose for Instance
Just suppose, for instance, that
all the Christians of the world had
taken seriously, twenty-five years
ago, Jesus’ doctrine of the second
mile and the other cheek. And sup
pose that having taken those ideas
sericusly they hnd consecrated
themselves to living in that fash
ion with the same determination
and selflessness that actuates the
communists.
Or, again, just suppose that the
Christians of the world had taken
seriously ten years ago Jesus’ doc
trine of mercy for the merciful.
What would have happened to this
world? '
Or, once aagin, just suppose that
all Christians everywhere should
accept Jesus’' proposition that the
meek shall inherit the earth, and
should suddenly set out by all the
powers at their command to be
meek. What effect would it have
on this generation?
We Have the Ideas
The trouble with this old world
is not with its head. We know how
to live better than we are living.
The trouble is with our hearts. We
have never learned to surrender
all our lives to a great ideal.
Communism is going to take this
world unless Christians are willing
to be more loyal to Jesus Christ
than Communists are to Karl
Marx.
George Burns feeds Gracie; Han
ley Stafford feeds Baby Snooks.
You:get the picture. =
“I trained for this job for a long
time,” Bud confided on the “Afri
ca Screams” set.
“I_was in show business before
Lou was born. I worked with
many comics in burlesque, wait
ing for the right one to come
along. When I saw Lou, I said ‘this
is it!”?
Bud declared there are only a
few comedians, such as Milton
Berle, Joe E. Lewis and Henny
Youngman, who can do single acts.
The others need feeders. He cited
that as the reason the late Rags
Ragland never clicked in the mo
vies.
As evidence of his craft. But
declared, “I know every move of
Lou’s body. I know just how he is
going to react. When we go out on
the stage of the Roxy Theater in
New York, we haven’t decided
what we'll do. Lou can choose
from any of a thousand routines
and ,11l have the question for
him.’
Success is a matter o the straight
man’s timing, he added. “I can
make anyone a comedian—even
you.”
