Tide Turns At Great Lakes
Waves, Now Part Of Old Navy,
Undergo Rigorous Training
By EDWARD J. LINEHAN
¢ NFEA sStaff Correspondent
GREAT LAKES, NI — (NEA)
~-The tide of servicewomen in
{he U. S. has turned. The Waves
are coming in again at Camp
John Paoul Jones.
From a ‘wartime personnel
flood of 86,000, the Waves re
ceded through demobilizaticn to
an ebb to below 2000 last Juae,
Then the Navy asked Congress
to plug the leak by enacting Pub
lic Law 625, making the lady
sailors part of the regular Navy.
The first contingeni oi 180 re
gular-Navy recruits arrived at
Great Lakes last ménth, astound
ing the traditionally all-male basc
on chilly mornings with erisp so=
prano voices ringing out: “Hup
two, three, four—your left.
vour left!” In almost no time, the
trim. blue-clad figures were
drilling with embarrassing pre
cision.
Every 10 weeks hereafter, half
a company of newly - inducted
Waves will move in for a rigorous
basic training preogram, and a
like number will leave for duty
stations or service schools.
That 10 weeks, however, will
never be mistaken for a rest cure.
Melodious rthough the commands
may be, they are delivered with
the insisténce' -of- 'a locomotive
whistle—and "the recruits jump.
They have to, in order to crowd
all their traihing activities into the
comparatively short “Boot” phase
of their. Navy lives. ;
Crammed daily schedules in
clude lecturgs on everything from
Naval History, through ships and
aireraft, to firgst aid. Instructors
are commissioned Wave officers
who were teachers in civilian life.
The physical training program, al
though naturally not up to the ob
stacle-course standards of their
male countergarts, is tough enough
to make the healthiest seaman re
cruit hit her double-decked sack
with a sigh of gratitude each night.
Working on the theory that all
work and no play makes Jacque
line a ]&uu sailor, recreation is
ampie. ovies, intramural sports,
hobby craft shops, and a comfort
able lounge complete "with' piano,

* Like any military organization,
the Waves are self-sufficient inso
far as their work details are con-
Icerned. Every third day a Wave
recruit finds herself scrubbing a
deck, standing a watch or doing
a turn in the galley. They seem
to accept the dungaree-details a
’bit more philosophically than men.
Apparently the female domestic
instinet is not lost in the swearing
in Iz‘)rocess. 4
ormal graduation completes
Ithe whirlwind rercruit training
‘period. A combination of aptitude
and preference determines the
Inext move of the Wave, who by
this time begins to consider her
self a sailor. Generally, special
ized training in a service school is
in order, after which the Gov
ernment’s expense begins to pay
dividends.
~ So far, 27 widely-varied jobs
have been assigned to Waves with
excellent results. It has been dis
covered that the fairest sex, often
reputed to gaze in mute wonder
at a screw driver, make top-notch
electronics technicians or aviation
‘machinist’s mates. From printing
to parachute-rigging, the gals in
blue are being prepared to “liber
ate” a man for possible sea duty.
The Navy’s maze of clerical chores
creates the most pressing demand
for the Wave yoeman, while the
needs of the hospital corps come
next.
Waves saw service at more than
1000 stations in the United States
and Hawaii during World War 11.
The establishment of the Redéruit
Training School at Camp John
Paul Jones marks the ungrudging
admission of the Navy brass that
a sailor in skirts is good national
defense. From the %Vave’s pont of
view, the Navy now offers an in
teresting career, so everyone is
happy.
But oh, those first 10 weeks.
CHILDREN PLAY BERLIN
AIR LIFT GAME
BERLIN — (AP) — The Brit
ish-American airlift supplying
Russian-blockade western Berlin
has given Berlin kids a new game
as well as added new word to the
German vocabulary. |
- The new word and the name of
the new game is “Luftbruecks )air
bridge) which is the German de
signation of the airlift.
The kids, who han%haround the
U. S. Army’s Tempelhof air bse
and the RAF's Gatow airport to
watcher incoming and departing
supply shuttle planes, play their
games in ‘streets and backyards.
They set their toy planes down
on sand or asphalt runways and
bring up toy trucks and wagons to
haul their cargoes away in imi
tation warehouses, later to have
them consumed by dolls, Thus
they complete the shipper-to-con
sumer service which has become
unique in world history. :
