Nothing Wrong With Radio
Giveaway, Except Too Many
| BY 808 THOMAS
HOLLYWOOD, Dec. 22— (AP)
—Ralph Edwards, parent of the
giveaway program, surveyed the
radio situation and shuddered,
“Are these my stepchildren?”
Edwards is iue man (did you
say culprit?) who touched off the
epidemic of iadio shows which
give contestants everything but
MGM studios and the Pentagon.
here’s his comment:
“There are toe many giveaway
shows on the air. The listening
public is getting too much of this
type of show. The situation has
gotten out of hand.”
This wouldn’t have happened,
added Edwards, if the National
Association of Broadcasters had
taken action.
“Instead of passing regulations
about giveaways,” said the marvel
of Merino, Colo., “The N. A. B.
should do something to protect
the ‘creator’ of airshow ideas.
Ideal Plentiful
“We spent years pertecting the
idea for the ‘truth or consequen
ces’ show. It was patterned after
‘lnformation Please” and ‘Prof.
Quiz,” but it was the first success
ful show in which the contestant
participated in the fun. We had a
hit — so what happens? NBC per
mits a show like ‘People are Fun
ny,” and other program pop up
with the same ideas as ours.
l “Then we gotl the idea for the
‘Hush’ contests. We had lawyers
work on it for months. The idea
was a sensational success— so
what happens? Along comes
‘Stop the Music’ and a lot of
other shows.
“If the N. A. B. had protected

us, this wouldn’t have happened.
As it is, everybody is down on
the giveaways and worthy chari
ties are in danger of losing a
source of funds. The ‘Hush’ con
tests have raised $10,000,000 for
the Heart Association, March of
Dimes and other groups.”
No Kind Words
Although he has no kind words
for his competitors, the 35-year
old toupeed quizzer upholds the
giveaway show against the on
slaughts of the crtics. Edgar Ber
gen and Fred Allen, who have
faced “Stop the Music” competi
tion, have claimed the giveaways
are not entertainment. |
“There is entertainment in lis
tening to the excitement of some
one else winning a fortune,” he
declared. “Only 10 percent of the |
listeners actually participate in
‘Hush’ contests. The others just‘
listen for the fun — so it must
be entertainment.”
In Washingron, A, D. Willard,
executive vice-president of N. A.
8., said:
“The 'N. A. B. has no way—
there is no way — to prevent any
legitimate program from going on
the air. All we can do is to bring
moral pressure on our members.
“But, I repeat, there is no legal‘
way we can prevent variations of]
an idea from being presented on.
the air.” i
Willard, by the way, has a cer
tain sympathy for Edwards, who
is having the ideas borrowed. For
he had an idea borrowed, too. He
was running a station in Wash
ington when a newspaper man,
John Heinie, approched him with
an idea for a new show. Willard
liked it, and pui it on,
| And Christmas was simple
then, too. Eeverything was simp
ler.
{ Dad brought home a four-bit
tree and set it up in the living
|room. The base was made by
' knocking one end out of a fruit
box. There weren’t any fancy
metal gadgets.
| It 'didn’t take half a week’s in-
lcome to decorate the tree. We put
on a few spangled candle hold
ers, a star, and rope affer rope of
cranberries afid popcorn strung
oh thread from mom's sewing kit.
It was a:beautiful tree, simple
and satisfying. Everyone in""g\‘e
family got a ¢pecial pleasure out
of it because he had done some
thing himself to make, it prettier.
In those long ago days the tra
dition of the Christmas stocking
was taken very seriously. Dad
'entered into the game, too, and
hung up his sogk along with the
others. Y
“Put one up with a hole in it—
you'll get more,” he joked. And
sure enough, «one of the smaller
‘boys did that. But Santa Claus,
too crafty to. be caught by that
old ruse, plugged the sock with
‘an orange.
§ Big Treat
There was" always an orange in
each stocking, and it was a big
‘treat then. What would a modern
child think of Santa Claus today
for leaving him a common thing
like an orange. The sock also was
stuffed with half a dozen kinds
of nuts — it took most of Christ
mas morning to crack them on
mom’s old hand iron before the
tireplace — and jaw-breaking,
rainbow-colored Christmas candy.
The presents were few but well
chosen. There was something to
wear — a new sweater or a stock
ing cap. But there was always
something to play with, toc. One
year of golden memory it was a
real flexible flyer sled, and by
nightfall the four small brothers
‘who shared this varnished won
‘dg‘ nearly had worn the runners
off. ;
What ever happened to that
old-fashioned Christmas. I was
talking to a friend about it the
other day, and he said:
“That was the kind of Christ
mas I had as a boy, too. But it has
gone up the chimney.
$5 Xmas Tree
“I paid $5 for a Christmas tree
this year, and the tinsel garbage
we bought to throw on it cost me
more than my father earned the
week he married my mother.
When we were through we didn’t
have a Christmas tree— we had
a Hollywood production. And
that’s exactly what it looked like:
all tinsel and no warmth. There
wasn’t a home-made thing on it.”
And my friend remarked that
the whole spirit of Christmas had
changed — to him at least—since
his boyhood.
“As I remember it,” he said,
“Christmas was a time when you
‘bought a few presents for close
friends or members of the family.
Today I get the idea that Christ
mas is just a parade of people
going by me with their hands out.
