Two Of Three Holiday Fires Here
Caused By Fireworks, Chief Says
['iremen answered three calls during the nolidays with
two of the fires being caused hy careless use of fireworks.
"I'ire Chief W. C. Thempson asks that persons not shoot
fireworks in the city and wherever they do shoot them
that extreme care be taken.
He said that the most danger
ous fireworks are the large ones
that are shot into the air. The
person shooting this type has no
control over where the abject
will land, said Chief Thompson.
ITe said the fireworks could land
on someone’s house or other place
where a large fire mifht result.
Fine Cooperation
Chief Thompson said the police
department had cooperated fine
in the prevention of fires from
fireworks shooting in the city and
in the arrest of persons guilty of
breaking this ordinance.
Late Christmas Evenight fire
men were at-the telephone office
on the corner of Clayton and Hull
streets where a stoker was smok
ing when a call came in from Pot
tery sireet where fireworks had
caused a fire.
Hit Near Oil Tanks
The burning fireworks hit near
tanks holding about 90,000 gal
lons of fuel oil and caught some
wood on fire, said Chief Thomp
son. Firemen readily extenguish
ed the fire, but some fuel oil that
had been spilled on the wood pre
sented a difficult battle.
Chief Thompson said, “It it had
been gasoline it . probably would.
have been a different story.”
Also firemen answered a call to
the Barnett Shoals Road where
fireworks had caused a small
grass fire. Firemen received this
call on December 24¢at 7:20 p.
m. Persons at a firework stand
nearly had the fire out when fire
men arrived. |
“The majority -of .the people
have been fire conscious dur
ing the holidays and I want to
thank them for their fine cooper
tion,” said Chief Thompson.
