THE STORY: When sixteen-!
year-old Merry Carson learns that
her dashing fother, Kin, has asked
her selfish mother, Susan, for a
divorce, her whole world turns
topsy-turvy. Kin leaves home and
Susan goes to pieces. Aunt Jane
comes to look after things. The
doctor tell Merry her mother needs
a change and suggests they take
her to St. Vincent’s, an island re
sort. At the hotel in St. Vincent’s,
Susan keeps up her martyr atti
tude. Aunt Jane decides that rent
ing a house might re-awaken Su
san’s interest in something out
side herself.
* 3 #
XI
That Aunt Jane had already
taken steps about finding a cot
tage was mace plain the next
morning when she, Susan and
Merry emerged from the dining
rbgm shortiy before nine, and a
plump, middle-aged, neatly brush
ed man came forward to greet
them.
“I understand that you are look
ing for a cottage,” he said pleas
antly. “Permit me to introduce
myself—l’'m Carter Bagby, realtor.
I have several proporties, one of
which I feel quite sure would in
terest you, if I could have the
pleasure of showing them?”
Aunt Jane studied him sharply.
Carter Bagby’s faded blue eyes be
hind horn-rimmed spectacles were
on Susan’s face with a look of in
terest that made Susan’s eyes wid
en and brought a faint trace of
color to her cheeks.
“What sort of place did you have
in mind, Mrs. Carson?” he ad
dressed Aunt Jane politely.
“I’'m Mrs. Carson,” said Susan
stiffly. “I'nis is my cousin, Miss
Jane Randall. And my daughter,
Miss Carson.”
Mr. Bagby shook hands all
around and said in a tone of sur
prise, . “Your daughter? Why, I
would have taken her for your sis
ter, Mrs. Carson.” ! |
“Of all the corny gags!” Merry
told herself, amused and scornful,
and saw, startled, that her mother
loved it!
‘. Mr.:Bagby ushered them out into
the brilliant sunshine and deposit
ed them in a slightly shabby, but
carefully cleaned station wagon.
And Aunt Jane and Merry found
themselves in the back seat while
Susan occupied the driver's seat
with Mr. Bigby. .
i There followed a fairly dreary
! morning, peering into cottages that
- were furnished with cast-off furni
. ture from other, better places;
' cottages that were neat and clean
. and painfully comfortless; cottages
ithat were grimy with use and
- cheerless and smelly. At last Sus
' an said sharply, “Really, Mr. Bag
by, if this is the best you have—"
{" "“Rentals are quite difficult, Mrs.
‘ Carson, I admit,” said Mr. Bagby.
“If you would consider buying a
plate, now, I have something I
‘ should like very much for you to
¢ see."
! Merry looked at Aunt Jane,
- startled.
g “Buy a place? But, Mother,
~we’'ve got the place at Marshall
{ville,” she protested.

“Which can easily be sold for a
very good price,” said Susan thin
ly over her shoulder. “I have very
little desire to go back there, and
if we could éind something decent
down here, Why shouldn’t we make
this our home?”
Mr. Bagby barely managed to
conceal his delight and sent the
station wagon at a good clip along
the: paved road between great
breached live-oaks, draped with
curtains of Spanish moss stirring
ever so faintly in the soft sun
drenched wind. Several miles
above St. Vincent'’s, along the road
that led to the neighboring island
of Guale, he turned the station
wagon in between tall oak gate
posts, and paused before a long,
low rambling white houle. It was
of stucco, with a patio. and a huge
picture window that framed an en
chanting view of surrounding
‘woods. with the silver blue glim
‘mer of the sea beyond. And aza
tleas were banked about the house,
like soft flames against the crea
lm_v-white stucco. I
Without 2 word he waited for
their comments. And since the
place was really enchanting, their
comments were flattering and ex
cited. Even Susan was eager as
Mr. Bagby helped her gracefully
out of the station wagon, brought
out keys and unlocked the front
door.
Before they had more than
peered into the huge living room,
with its beautiful fireplace and
carved mantel, or glimpsed the
three large bedrooms, each with
its own bath, the compact yet su
perbly efficient kitchen, the long
living room, with the glass wall
that looked out over a walled-in
garden that could be pushed open
to bring the garden inside, they
knew they would take it.
Susan was bright-eyed, and
there was a little color in her
cheeks.
“l can’t imagine anybody want
ing to sell such a place, Mr. Bagby
—it’s simply lovely,” said Susan
eagerly.
Mr. Bagby looked sad.
“The owner doesn’t want to sell,
Mrs. Carson. Oh, I don’t mean
that the place isn’t for sale. Tt is.
I only mean that he is being forced
to sell. He fell in love with the
place while it was still in the blue
print stage, and—well, his money
gave out and now he has to sell it.”
Aunt Jane was watching him
Shrewly, and suddenly she asked
dryly, “Who is the owner, Mr.
Bagby?”
And Mr. Bagby said quietly, “I
am, Miss Randall.”
“And what are you asking for
it?” Aunt Jane’s voice was dry.
- Mr. Bagby stiffened ever so lit
tle and his gray eyes grew wary.
“Seventeen thousand five hun
dred,” he answered, and his tone
now was completely business like.
“Ouch!” said Aunt Jane, and
whistled under her breath.
“I think it’s very reasonable,”
said Susan crisply. “We’ll take it,
Mr. Bagby.”
