Fall Of Star Fan Mail
BY 808 THOMAS
’ HOLLYWOOD, Jan. 19—(AP)
—The volume of fan mail to mo
vie stars has slumped considera
bly in recent months.
This is one of the facts I uncov
ered in a visit to Hollywood’s bus
tling postoffice. My guide was Bu=
perintendent Walter Bott, and he
couldn’t ascribe the reason for the
decline of fan letters., Your guess
is as good as his, '
Don't get the idea that fan mail
has dwindled to a few scrawled
posteards, There’s still enough
volume to keep four men working
full time. It’s a unique problem in
the postal service. Probably no
other postoffice has so much in
adequately addressed mail.
Each train to Los . Angeles
brings a load of fan mail. Fhese
addressed to stars at studios It
Culvert City, Burbank, West Los-
Angeles, etc., are sent to postal
stations in those areas. But the
great bulk of mail is sent without
the studio address. That and let
ters for studios in Hollywood
proper ate shipped to the Holly~-
wood office,
Four men sort the mail, armed
with directories which show the
latest Studios of addresses for the
stars. The letters afre tossed into
cubbyholes, and there is oné for
every well-known player in the
movies. Some, in fact, I had never
heard of.
The mail is assembled by studios
and each sends a messenger to
pick it up every day. Daily aver
age for the big studios is around
three and a half bags.
Superintendent Bott reported a
decline in recentF‘years of serews
ball addresses. (For instante, &
nose drawn on an envelope inten
ded for Jimmy Dm'arxte.f Lately
there have been a few tagged onlg
with Buttons av@sßows, but suc
pranks have d&éfied The postal
boys are just ds Bappy, They can
usually find the right addressee,
but it slows down'the mail.
They have enough’ trouble with
the foreign ‘fhail, eéß of which
arrive with every boat. Every
country of the world is represen=
ted.
Despite what their press agents
don’t score in the fan mail de
partment right away. “It takes
years for actors to start getting
a volume of mail,” Bott reported.
“Aparently the public likes to see
the stars on the screen for awhile
and get to know them.”

ON THE
AIR - WAVES
One of the most popular pro
grams on the air today is WGAU
CBS’ “Herb Shriner Time” which
is heard this afternoon at 5:45.
Herb is just a plain down to earth
fellow who seems to get a great
kick out of interviewing the many
well known comedians and artists
on his program. Dorothy Collins
offers a lyrical contrast to the
earthy humor of Herb Shriner this
afternoon at 5:45.
“Madame Olga” deals in on a
story of a phony counsellor-at
love whose handsome accomplice
helps her blackmail well-to-do
women, until federal police break
up the racket, is heard on WGAU
CBS’ “F. B. 1. In Peace and War™
tonight at 8:00. Martin Blaine
plays Field Agent Sheppard.
“Mr. Keen, Tracer of Lost Per
sons” finds the culprit in “The
Beautiful Show Girl Murder
Case” on WGAU-CBS at 8:30, Mr.
Keen has the ability to read the
minds as well as the motives of
the people who become involved
in crime.
Dana Andrews joins the guest
star parade on “Suspense” tonight
over WGAU-CBS at 9:00, when
he plays the lead in a blood-chill
ing story with a circus back
ground — “Ilf the Dead Could
Talk"”
It is a tense, dramatic role for
the young actor, who will be
backed by a cast of veteran radio
performers.
Andrews plays a circus aerialist,
whose obsession to commit mur
der takes possession of him
against his will, after he learns
that the girl he loves—who works
with him in a trapeze routine —
is going to marry a third member
of the act.
Fate gives an ironic twist to his
plans, and there is a terrific
shocker in the closing seconds of
the script.
~ Screen - actress Ruth Hussey
stars in “Parnassus on Wheels,’s’
Christopher Morley’s popular
short story adapted to radio on
WGAU-CBS' “Hallmark Play
house” tonight at 10:00.
As Helen McGill, Miss Hussey
falls out with her brother, An=
drew, who neglects his New En
gland farm to embark on .a liter
ary career. Undeclared war exists
between the two until another lit
erary devotee drives up to the
McGill farm in what he calls his
“Parnassus on Wheels” — a wag=-
on stacked with rows of books.
His arrival ushers in a new area
in the descoraant life on the Mc-
Gills’ farm.
“Ring The Bell” tomorrow
morning at 11:30. This is a pro
gram that everyone can take part
in. You don’t have to be too
smart, but you do have to be able
to recognize one of the three mys
tery tune. If you “Ring The Ball”
tomorrow you will win a valua=-
ble gift. Listen to WGAU’s “Ring
The Bell” tomorrow at 11:30 a. m.
If you are interested in keep=
ing up with the latest sports news
from all over the nation, listn to
WGAU’s “Sports Parade.” All of
the scores on the leading basket
ball games, plans for the comming
baseball season and news of the
nations top athleties are featured
on “Sports Parade” every night
Monday through Friday.
