The Early American Dance
Club will not meet on Monday
night, May 16, as scheduled, but

dinner dance, This will close the
meetings for the season.

will speak to the Clarke County
Women Voters at their monthly
luncheon meeting to be held in
the Holman Hotel on Tuesday,
May 17, at 1 p. m. Prof. Feild
will speak on the so-called equal
rights for women Rgill now he

posing the bill, saying it in reali
ty discriminates against them in

Athens High Girls Awarded
State Homemaking Degrees
Four Athens High School F. H. A. members were re
cently honored by State Homemaker degrees at the Geor
gia Future Homemakers Fourth 'Annual Conference in
Atlanta, May 6-7. Only five girls from the State at large
were chosen for these degrees and four of the five were
Athens High School members.
Those honored were Mary
Spratlin, Margaret Kenney, Helen
Hopkins, and Marguerite Bagley
Horne, all of Athens High School,
and ‘Barbara Cates of Cummings
High School.
This degree is the highest State
honors that individual Future
Homemakers can win. A Junior
Homemaker degree and a Chapter
Homemaker degree are prerequi
sites for the candidates for this
honor. Candidates must have been
active for two years and have sat- ‘
isfactorily finished at least two
vears of homemaking instruction.’
They must have held responsible
positions in school, chapter, and
community activities which con
tribute to better family life. |
Special Requirements |
They also must have participat
ed in an outstanding manner in
activities provided for in the State
F. H. A. program of work. They
must have assumed responsibility
for some worthwhile homemaking
activity for a period long enough

their personal goals in the light of
needs, interests, and abilities and
have followed a plan for the wise
use of resources to achieve their
goals. They must have also help
ed others in the community to
understand the goals of .a broad
homemaking program.
Athens High School was one of
the 24 F. H. A. chapters out of the
265 F. H. A. chapters in Georgia to
receive an honor roll certificate.
Awards were made on a basis of
32 standards of work and service.
This is the first time that the
honor chapters have been official
ly recognized.
Rachel Inglewright of Athens
High School was clected program
chairman for the Third District to
serve next year.
Delegates attending the conven
tion other than the girls who re
ceived degrees were Rachel In
glwright, Regna Riddling, and
Miss Odessa Williamson, chapter
adviser.

Mrs. Fred Whitehead with a cor
sage, as she had recently been
chosen Georgia Mother of the
Year.
The program was built around
National Family Week and the
invocation was by Mrs. R. C.
Singleton, second vice-president
of the Georgia Council of Church
Women; Mrs.. J. W. Bailey, pres
ident of the Athens Council of
Church Women, extended the
welcome to the group present.
Mrs. James Akins gave the
scripture reading, and Laddie
Wigley, from Chase Street
School, sang “The Green Cathe
dral” and “The Lord’s ‘Prayer.”
He was accompanied by Mrs.

The main addrses was given by
Dr. B. Davie Napier, Chaplain of
the University ,of Georgia, and
his topic was “Home Builders
Are World | Builders.”
He stated %hat good home
builders are good world builders
and he d‘i;ussed the American
home in Irelationship to the
church and!school.
After Dr. Kapier’s talk a movie
on “Family Life’” was shown by
Gerald Cauble, head of the Au
aio-Visual Aids Department,
University of Georgia.

The meeting was attended by
125 people of Athens and it was
unusual, in the fact that; it was
the only May Fellowship lunch
eon in the state that had the
honor of being prepared and
served by the Georgia Mother of
the Year, Mrs. J. F. Whitehead.

Ben Mcßee and T. W. Paschall
fixed the table decorations.

Children of Israel, and Father|
Franeis, Father Donovan and
Mrs. Bob McWhorter of the St.
Joseph’s Catholic Church were

CERAMICS EXHIBITED
Ezra Sellers and William Wat
son, instructors in the University
of Georgia department of .art, have
recently been notified that pieces
of their ceramic work have been
included in the Fourth Annual
Decorative Arts. Ceramic Exhibi
tion sponsored by the Wichita Art

Associztion in Wichita, Kansas.
This is an exhibition of national
importance to which craftsmen in
ceremics, metal work, weaving,
enameling and other fields sub
mit work which is passed on by a
jury of eminent artists-craftsmen.
Mr. Sellers is represented by a
black and yellow vase and by a
brown mat and sand bowl. Mr.
Watson’s entry is a tan mat vase
with an incised design.
