Rubbing Alcohol Helps Relieve
Discomfort Of Chigger Bites
| By EDWIN P. JORDAN, M. D.
Written for NEA Service
In some of the Army camps dur
| ing the war, chiggers proved to be
| far from a joke. In peacetime,
! too, chiggers cause a lot of dis
| comfort to many peopie who are
l exposed.
| The chigger is a six-legged, red,
| undeveloped form of mite. At this
| stage of its development the mite
I apparently must become a parasite
|and live on domestic animals,
| birds, or human beings.
] When a person walks through
{underbrush or grass, he comes in

J'will probably need shortening if
| you want last summer’s long skirts
to look as up-to-the-minute as
newer fashions do.
When taking up skirts length,
don’t rely too implicity upon old
hemline creases as guides for new
markings. All hemlines have a
tendency to go uneven 'after a
| period of long wear and frequent
| laundering. 7 :
{ The best procedure for re-hem
ming is to rip out the old hem and
to determine the new one by me
ticulous marking of the skirt
]while you have it on. Since you
can’t possibly mark the new hem
} line yourself, you will have to en
list the services of some obliging
}person.
l Have her use a wooden ruler
and have her mark with pins or
I chalk as you stand in your accus
toined postural habits and pivot
around to accommodate her reach.
To make your shortened gar
ments look professionally hemmed
put in widely spaced stitches and
catch ‘thread into fabric so that
stitches will not be visible from
the outside.
[ these undeveloped mites lie. Chig
| gers crawl on the skin and when
Ithey meet an obstacle, such as a
| garter or belt, they are likely to
l stop and bite, fastening themselves
| to the surface of the skin. They do
{not burrow into the skin but at
tach themeselves to it. The mite
tills with tissue fluids and drops
off after a few hours, leaving a red
welt on“the skin which is likely to
! itch intensely.
| RELIEF FOR ITCHING
According to one authority,
the servere itching caused 'byl
chigger bites can be relieved by
touching the area with rubbing
alcohol three times a day, followed ‘
immediately by some anti-itching
oil, such as standard boric acid‘
ointment with a little phenol, usu
ally 1 per cent, added to it. |
This ointment should be applied
only in small quantities after the
alcohl—about three times a day
as needed to relieve the itching.
It is rubbed in gently and what is
left is wiped off with a little cot
ton. In addition to relieving the
itch, this treatment may prevent
infection with germs which often
follows scratching.
Of course, no treatment is as
satisfactory as prevention and this
is true for chigger bites as well as
it is for anything else. If a person
is likely to come in contact with
tall graass or other vegetation on
which boots or long trousers may
be be sufficient to prevent them
from reaching the skin. Dusting
the skin with flower of sulphur
will also help to ward off these
troublesome mites.

Cowpoke Breaks Into Song
Field With “Ghost Riders”
BY 808 THOMAS
HOLLYWOOD, May 26.—(AP)
—A Young cowpoke went ridin’
to Hollywood one day . . .
The first line of Stan Jones’
sensational song hit, “Ghost Rid
ers in the Sky,” almost fits his
own story. ‘
The haunting song astounded
the music business last week by
leaping to the top of the hit pa
rade without a previous showing
in the top tune liip. Observers
believe it's the first time this has
happened. The event makes ui
Death Valley ranger the current
King of Tin Pan Alley.
The story of the song goes bm-k'
to Jones’ boyhood on the range
near Douglas, Ariz. An old cm\'—l

| At night Jones would strum a

and' advised him t{o take his songs

l Too Hymn-Like
| Jones took the advice and

He was about to return to
