Arthur H. McCar;i:?E;—“Peck’s Bad Boy” Of
; My University Class.
) BY T. W. REED
Back in my boyhood days one
of the favorite stories written for
boyß was known as “Peck’s Bad
Boyi® There was nothing real bad
abouit. him but simply a super
abundance of fun and frolic, a boy
R yas always up to some kind
of a ridiculous prank.
lA*my University of Georgia
class, sthe Class of 1888 we had
ouris®Peck’s Bad Boy.” He was
thur H. McCarrel, of Augusta,
andg gie was as full of fun and
frollg as an egg is of meat. I can
recall a few of his practical jokes.
1 wish I could recall all of them.
Thaéy“would fill up a good-sized
' k'and they would all be read
able,
I@member one day when he
pulled off one at the expense of
the Board of: Trustees. The Board
u,seé&;.(; meet on the second flooi
of what was then called the Li
brary Building, now known as the
Acgfemic Building just inside the
Broad street front of the campus.
Arthur cared nothing for the
feelings of the trustees. He was
out jafter some fun and he got it
andjeluded all suspicions as to the
perpetrator of the practical joke.
Hed:new enough to manufacture
sulpherated hydrogen H2S in
chemical terms. As to odor a rot
ten egg has no edge on it.
Arthur got him a quart bottle
witga cork top and a crooked
glass tube inserted therein to carry
off the offensive gas. He inserted
the . end of the crooked tube
through the keyhole of the front
door and poured the sulphur and

hydrogen together. It didn’t take
long for the trustees to sniff the
product of that mixture, and all
of them suffered from extreme
nausea. They had to adjourn the
meeting and get out of that room
pronto. Arthur had his fun and
escaped detection.
[ One evening at supper time he
pulled a stunt that almost scared
‘the life out of us as we sat at the
table eating our supper.
~ The kerosene oil lamps were
burning brightly and the usual
noisy chatter was going on among
some thirty or forty college boys.
Suddenly the noise of some heavy
substance was heard as it bumped
down the steps that led down to
the basement floor wheer we were
served our daily meals. The
bumping. noise was accompanied
by a hissing sound and then—
There was an explosion that put
out all.the lamps on the table and
threw splinters of glass all over
the food. We were startled. We
had no idea what had occurred.
That was before the days of com
munism, labor troubles or Ku
Kluxers, that organization having
about folded up in its unlawful
procedures.
As soon as we could get a light,
we started investigation. A rough
ly made bomb, manufactured from
strong cord that had enclosed a
moderate supply of powder had
been used. The plastering had
been blown off the side wall, but
luckily the explosion had set off
no fire. The bomb had been tossed
down the steps at a time when no

INVISIBLE RAIN . D¢. D. F. Stedman, Canadian Re
search Council, shows half a plane windshield treated with his ,
rain repellent remaining clear (right) while other half blurs. Dr.
Stedman says repellent breaks rain into droplets invisible to eye,
one would be using them and no
body had been in danger. The
jokesters had taken care to see to
that.
They had covered their tracks
thorgughly and neither Mr. Sum
mey nor the faculty could ever
fird out the guilty parties. It
finally leaked out among the stu
dents as to who had pulled off the
stunt, but they kept their knowl
edge to themselves. I kept my
mouth shut for I didn’t want to see
any of my college mates feel the
rod of discipline, since no one had
been hurt.
But we all knew pretty soon that
Arthur McCarrel had made that
bomb, It was in keeping with his
tendency to play practical jokes.
Mothers' Brain-Wave
Builds Big Business
By NEA Service
FERGUSON, Mo. —(NEA) —
two women can turn their brain
waves into a successful business
without budging from home is a
puzzler which three enferprising
young housewives in this St. Louis
suburb have solved.
Judith Payne, Mary Price, and
Anne Bassage brain-waved the
business of personalizing phono
graph records for children. In the
few months since orders were
first taken, business has mush
roomed; is showing a profit which
many a businessman would envy.
The custom-made stories holi
day, birthday and get-well mes
sages, news of special events and
so on are’recorded in the base
ment of the Price home. The

three entrepreneurs eplist the
help of a professional engineer to
learn the mechanics of cutting
records. The engineer also super
vised the ‘installation of studio
machinery, simplified for novices
to handle.
Small try who receive the rec
ords from doting relatives and
firends are surprised and mysti
fiel to hear their very own story
spinning off the unbreakable rec
ords., Personal data concerning
age, nickname, pet likes and dis
likes and recent accomplisments
is supplied by a detailed ques
tionnaire usually filled out by a
proud parent or wellwisher. This
data is doven into a basic script.
Sometimes a small subject is
made the hero of an adventure
story. Other times, he hears all
about his birthday party. The
little daughter of a noted diplo
mat listened with rapt attention
while the mysterious voice ex
plained why her father had to
travel so much.
Scripts are. written after the
three businesswoman - mothers
have tucked their own brood in
for the night. Before a script is
recorded, however, there in-the
knoy youngsters listen, criticize
the ‘“corn” and offer candid sug
gestions for improvements.
“Children are quick to detect
and resent any efforts to ’talk
down’ to them,” the three women
say. “We mever use baby talk nor
do we try to shame a child into
correcting a bad habit.”
For livelier entertainment,
sound effects are worked into sto
ries. Very young children seem to
enjoy home-made imitations of
fire engine sirens, whistles, and
animal calls the most. But older
children prefer authentic sounds.
