TAFT - HARTLEY FOES HAIL
PROPOSED DEMO (OMPROMISE
WASHINGTON, June S.—(AP)
—Senate Republicans battling to
keep a big part of the Taft-Hart
ley layw contended today that a|
Democratic compromise drive
plays into their hands.
. But Senator Douglas (D.-II 1.
a leader of the move to revise the|
Truman labor bill, took a sharply |
different view. He said:
“I think we've got a very good
chance to put our program|
across,”
Senate debate on the adminis
tration bill is scheduled to start
Monday. It would repeal the
Taft-Hartley Act and replace it
with a slightly modified version
of the old Wagner Act.
Three Republicans, Senators
Taft (Ohio) Donnell (Mo.) and
Smith (N.J.), are sponsoring a
substitute measure which wnuld!
retain the basic provisions of the|
T-H law. l
. Both' their substitute and the|
administration bill amendments |
backed by Douglas and a group|
of other senators—including both |
Democrats and Republicans—
provide for presidential seizure
of struck plants in national
emergency disputes.
That proposal came under bit
ter attack by the National Coal
Association. John D. Battle, the
association’s executive vice-presi
dent, said in a statement that‘
“seizure does not solve labor dis- 1
putes; it only leads to more seiz—l
ure and ultimately to national
ization and state-ism.” l
KANSAS COMMITTEEWOMAN
Truman May Appoint
Woman As Treasurer
. WASHINGTON, June 4. — (AP) — Highly placed
White House aids reported today that President Truman
has decided to appoint a woman as Treasurer of the
United States.
These informants said that Mrs. George Neese Clark of
Richland, Kas., is the most likely choice for the post. She
is Democratic National Committeewoman from Kansas.
Reached at a Washington hotel,
Mrs. Clark acknowledged her ap
pointment is_‘‘definitely in the
fire” but said%ho final decision has
been made.
She indicated a decision may be
reached next week when she is
expected to confer with the Presi
dent.
Mrs. Clark is President of a
bank, has a grain elevator, and
operates a number of farms. She
is divorced and has no children.
If appointed she would succeed
William A. Julian, who was killed
in an automobile accident last
Sunday. Julian had been treasurer
(this is not the same job as serc
tretary of the treasury, a cabinet
post) since 1933.
I'ne prospective appointment is
in line with the President’s deter
mination to give greater recogni
tion to women and the part they
played in his surprise election
victory last November,
Denmark Post
Only Ilast Thursday, at his
weekly news conference, Mr.
Truman said he had several wo
men under consideration for ap
pointments to diplomatic posts, in
cluding that of ambassador to
Denmark.
He did not name any one at the
time.
Appointment of a woman as
treasurer would be another victo
ry for Mrs. India Edwards, chair

Five proposed amendments to
the administration bill, including
the seizure proposal, were out
lined to an all-day meeting of
Democratic senators yesterday.
There was no decision on any of
them, but backers of the amend
ments claim they attracted some
support which they said the ad
ministration bill otherwise would
not get.
Besides Douglas, original spon
sors of the five amendments in
cluded Senator Hill (D.-Ala.)
and Republige® Senators Aiken
(Vt.) and Morse (Ore.).
In addition to seizure of struck
plants for up to 90 days, the
amendments provide for: :
A free speech guarantee to
both employers and workers;‘
union financial reports; collective
bargaining in good ,faith on the
part of both unions and employ
ers; and for oaths by both union
officers and employers that they
are not Communists, Fascists, or
members of totalitarian organ
izations.
It was learned that Taft and
other backers of his substitute
bill were much relieved when
they found out just what kind of
a compromise the Democratic
leadership has in mind.
Taft, it is known, regards the
compromvise as less of a vote
getter than the one which went
down to defeat in the House a*
month ago, despite the fact it
had the backing of Speaker Ray
burn (D.-Texas).

The office of treasurer of the
United States is essentially a
banking job for the government.
The treasurer is particularly
charged with the receipt, dis- |
bursement and accounting of pub
lic money, and the custody, is
suance and redemption of curren
cy and coin. The issue and pay
ment of checks, the safekeeping
os securities deposited as collater
al or otherwise, and the payment
of public debt obligations are in
the treasurer’s hands.
The treasurer’s signature ap

DEATH RATE FOUR
TIMES AS HIGH
CLEVELAND, O. — The traffic
death rate at night per vehicle op

The Street and Traffic Safety
Lighting Bureau reports. On the
basis of traffic density, there
should have been 4,600 night
deaths last year, whereas, actually
srare were 18,400. Inadequate
visibility, the Bureau says, is a
major factor in the high night ac
