MOST dog owners find that their
dogs hecome well mannered
and obedient without anyone con
scionsly deing anything to teach
them these manners Common sense
and intelligent handling usually pro
doce a well mannered dog. In order
for a dog to follow certain specific
commands, however, a definite train
ing program is helpful. Obedience
training courses provide the an
swer for most dog owners who want
their dog to *come”, ‘sit”, “lie
down” or “stay" upon command
Another helpful and equally im
portant command is “go”, a com
mand often overlooked and espec
jally valunable in the home for send
ing the dog from the room. If you
wish your dog to leave the kitchen
or dining room or go 'to any par
ticnlar part of the house, give the
command “g 0 which should be ac
companied by extending the arm
and pointing in the direction you
wish him to move
Perhiaps the easiest way to give
the dog the idea is to run a light
cord frem his collar to some kind

of pulley arrangement on the oppo
site side of the room, and back
again. At the same time the com
mand “go” is given, point to a spot
near the pulley and give a jerk on
the cord, starting him in the right
direction. This may sound a little
complicated, but actually it may
have to be done only a few times
if this command is taken up fairly
late in a dog's training.
Greatest difficulty will probably
be found in teaching him to follow
the direction of the point. For a
while he may go into the Kitchen
when you try to send him into the
living room. But by calling him
back and using plenty of patience,
you will make the dog so conscious
of arm movement that no voice
command wid be needed.
Training such as this takes a
number of days and a good deal of
patience. Don't be over anxioug—
work the dog for short periods,
and be lavish with praise. Remem.
ber he wants to please you by doing
what you wish If he doesn't it is
only because he doesn't understand |

SAND PAYS ALL
OF TOWN'’S BILLS
SEDGEFORD, England—(AP)—
This Norfolk village runs on sand.
The 700 or so villagers haven’t
paid a penny in local taxes in 15
years.
The tax rate is fixed at eight
pence on a pound’s worth of real
estate-—roughly dollars 3.50 a
hundred. But it hasn’t been col=-
lected. |
Sedgford has paid all its ex
penses and made enough extra to
refurbish the war memorial and
start a new athletic field by selling
natural resources—sand from a
village-owned sandpit.
