Negroe Swimming Pool
Nearing Completion
The new colored swimming pool,
located off Athens avenue and be
hind the water works, is nearing
completion, announces City Recre
ation Director Wayne Shields, un
der whose diréction the new pro=
ject is being built. 3
One of the most modern swim
ming pools to be found will be at
the service of the coiored citizens!
of this city with the opening of the i
pool. 1
Preliminary work was begun in |
May, but actual construction was
started on August 1, states Mr.
Shields, and if present plans are
carried out, the pool will be com=-
pleted in two weeks. If the weath~
er permits, one full week of free ‘
swimming will officially dedicate |
the pool.
A new filtering system, the Dia
tameous Earth filter, will be used |
in the pool, the latest thing in
swimming pool filtering. Water
will be changed and new water
run into the pool every eight hours
under health department stand
ards. The Diatameous Earth filt
er will be the first of its kind in
Athens.
The pool measures 45 by 90
feet, with the deepest part meas~ |
uring seven and a half feet, and
the most shallow point one foot.
Spacious dressing rooms flank one
end of the pool, with concession
stands for both the swimmers and
onlookers. The area around the
pool includes six acres, which
will be utilized to the fullest by
pienic grounds.
Funds for the pool were raised
by City revenue certificates to the
amount of $26,000, which will be
retired in nine years. All profits
from the pool will go in paying the
debt,
Mr. Shields says Athens avenue
will be extended one block and
the entrance to the pool will come
off that street. The branch line
of the Southern Railroad runs ad
jacent to the pool.
The pool will be under the di
rection of the City Recreation De
partment and staffed by colored
employees.

Pennsyivania Election
WASHINGTON, Sept. 15.— (AP) —Republicans who
have been calling for all-out attacks on the Truman ad.
ministration grabbed for the GOP campaign reins today o,
the strength of a Pennsylvania special election victory.
As an example, 3enator Wherry
of Nebraska, the GOP floor lead
, said his party’s success in a
trial run in the 26th Pennsylvania
District “shows there is no room
for me-tooers and compromises in
next year's fight for control of
Congress.”
“We've ’ot to give the Demo
crats hell if we expect to win,”
Wherry told a reporter.
Ag floor leader, Wherry often
finds himself in the minority even
among his Republican Senate coi
leagues in his opposition to Pres

eign policy proposals. :
“Sweet Campaign”
He has contended, along with
some other party aembers, that
the Republicans tossed away the
presidential election last year be
cause Gov. Thomas E. Dewey put
un a swestnags and light campaign
in contrast with -~ President Trfi

Wherry’s hand seems to have
been strengthened Ly the victory
of Republican John P, Saylor over
Mrs. Robert L. Coffey, sr., the
Democratic candidate, in the
Pennsylvania congressional race
where the Jresident’s program
