WINDY CENTER—Research scientists at the National Advisory

Cleveland, 0,, install 2 model plane in the 8- by 8-foot test section
of the world’s largest supersonic wind tunnel The new tunnel
produces wind speeds of up to 1500 miles per hour—twice the speed
of sound. Airstream and speed in the tunnel are controlled by
flexing the one-inch-thick stainless steel side plates. Fourteen |
hydraulically operated screw jacks are needed to do the flexing. |
Naval Research Helps
Doctors Prevent Colds
With New Allergy Drug
NEW YORK, Sept. 27-- New an
tihistaminic drugs developed by
pharmaceutical chemists to relieve
symptoms of hay fever and other
allergic disorders are bLeing used
with great suceess to ward off the
costly common cold, a' survey of
medical research disclosed today.
The new “cold killers” are re
ported by doctors to be as much
as 90 percent effective in stopping
the onset of a cold if used within
an hour after the first cold symp
toms are noticed. Physicians pre
scribe the tablets under the drug
“Coricidin,” derived from “co
ryza,” meaning the common cold.
and “cide,” to kiil.
Coricidin tablets contain in their
red coating a small amount of the
newly - perfected antihistaminie
drug Chlor-Trimeton, reported to
be the most potent of ine type used
to relieve the sneeziang, sniffling,
stopped-up nasal passage and
hives of hay fever and other aller
gies., The tablet center contains
aspirin and other compounds gen
erally prescribed for colds.
The discovery that tkc antihis
taminic drugs stop the onset of
colds was made accidentally by a

Further Research
_Further research with antihistam
inics led 1o the statement this
month in the Journal of the Amer
ican Medical Associaticin that “the
common cold is an allergic re
sponse in susceptible persons to
contact with a specitic protein
which is the cold virus or its pro
duct.”
The most important research
study on the role of antihistamin
ics as cold preventives were car
ried out by Capt. John M. Brew
ster, M. C,, U. S. Navy, at the U.
S. Naval Hospital at“ Great Lakes,
111, with 572 cold patients, over a
seven-month period in the sta
tion’s cold clinic.
In the report of his findings in
the U. S. Naval Medical Bulletin,
Capt. Brewster said that a cold
was considered to ha e been “ab
sorbed or cured” when all signs
and symptoms disappeared com=
i pletely with in 24 hrs., of the begin=-
ning of treatment, and remained
‘absent for at least 48 hours after
all treatment was stopped. Capt.
| Brewster reported:
; “All symptoms were absorbed in
| 90 percent of the patients in whom
treatment with antihistaminic
drugs was begun with m the first
hour after onset of sympiloms, and
| in 87 percent of patients treated
within two hours of unset; 74 per=
cent of patients who received
treatment within six hours, and
70 per cent of patients who receiv
ed treatment within 12 hours of
onset, were also cured.”
Capt. Brewster est'inated that
the common cold costs the nation
' about 100 million lost man-days of
{ employment annually -- indicat
ing how large industries may re
duce time lost due to the spread
of colds among employes—, and
that the annual financial bill of
the American public due to colds
is somewhere between 1 and 3
billion dollars.
Real Progress
“1t is believed that real progress
in the elimination of ‘fie common
¢old will be made when and if an
antihistaminic drug which is ef=
fective and yet sufficiently safe to
permit the public to purchase it
without a prescription 1s develop~-
ed.’
It is in this regard inat the de
velopment of Coricidin is hailed
by certain authorities, who point
out that Caricidin tabiets contain
only 2 milligrams of Chior-Trime
ton, the antihistaminic ingredient,
whereas other antihistaminics are
administered in doses ranging
from 20 to 50 milligranis
The Chlor-Trimeton in Coricidin
is rated by some researches to
have a “therapeutic irdex” or
“safety factor” 10 to 20 times that
of other antihistaminics. This per
mits drastic lowering ot effective
dosage, with a resultant sharp re
duction in so-colled “hide effects,”
such a drowsiness, which distin
guishes may of the older antihis
taminics.
The drugs used as cold preven
tives are relatively new in phar
maceutical chemistry. Cnly a few
.w re available up to about a year
‘ageé; now there are about fifteen
available for prescription by phys=
icianss They are called antihistam=
inics because they block the work
of a body chemical calied hista
mine, Histamine, when stirred into
action by substances io which a
person is allergic or antagonistic,
causes human tissues to act ab
normally in the production of
moisture, and in other ways.
Trimeton, the parent compound
from which Chlor-Trimeton and
Coricidin were developed, was
discovered to be so effective that
its use for ~" public school pupils
with hay fever, hives and p:{?en
asthma was ordered hy Dr. Fred
erick J. Bailey, Deputy Health
Commissioner of Boston.

“It is ventured that the elimin

YES, HELP WAS NEEDED
LONDON —(AP)— The Brtish
Air Ministry was intrigued. Mid
way in the war, an inventor wrote
in to say he needed minor techni
cal assistance on an invention that
would keep airplanes from ex
ploding when they crashed. John
Edwards, parliamentary secretary
to the Board of Trade, told a con
ference of scientists the ministry
quickly offered help.
‘He then wrote back to say his
idea was that there should be in
each petrol tank a capsule con
taining a substance which would
render petrol non-inflammable,
the capsule to be made so it would
melt when the petrol reached a
certain temperature, thus releasing
the contents.
“The two details on which he
needed official assistance: What
‘the capsule should be made of and
what it should contain.”
