American Education Week
BY MAGDALENE GLENN
November 6-12 marks the 29th
observance of American Educa
tion Week. Making Democrac.’
Work has been selected as the
theme.
‘ Democracy depends upon the
| general intelligence of the many
| rather than.the wisdom of the
few. People are the authority and
the strength. Through their zeal
| and ability to govern themselves
the ideals of freedon take root
| and blossom. That is why jublic
| education is essential to the sur
vival and nurture of our free gov
, ernment. The public sch.cols stand
as constant reminders of this fact.

democracy to flsurish 1n our coun
try. They point to the need of vig
orous instruction in demodwacy
and for deruocracy. To achieve this
and we must extend aad improve
the educational program in term
of aims and needs of present day
America.
The rapidly increasing elemen
tary schoo. enrollments constitute
the greatest single problem of fac
ing Amer'can educatio todzy.
There are nearly 300,000 more
pupils in elementary school: in
the school year 1948-49 than in
1947-48. School en-ollments will
grow rapidly at each grade level
throughout the next decade,
straining even furtner the de
pleted school facilities cf the na
tion.
| Educational .‘roblems
Much publicity has been given
to educat. nal problexs in Geor
gia. The General Assembly was
cognizant in existing conditions
and of the dire need for improve
ments in our educational program
when both branches, almost unan
imously, enacted into law the
Mininum Foundatioa Program.
The people of the sta‘e are appre
ciative of the enactment. They are
also appreciative of the interest
that is being shown toward finan
cing the program in the January
1950 session.
Democracy casts its bread upon
the waters when it equips our
schools and colleges in terms of
their mighty responsibikity. Edu-~
cation casts its bre:d upon the
waters when it proviies opportu
nities for development cf individ
ual abilities and their use in re
lation to general welfare.
Visit your schoc! during Amer
jcan Education Wees. Acquaint
yourself with its program, its
needs and its accomplishments.

are urged to visit your school on

Inspirational
Week Closes
Christian Educational Week
closes at the First Christian
Church today with the morning
message! by the minister. It has
been a season where every effort
has been put forth to arouse a
consciousness of the need of more
reading, study and training in the
church program. The young peo
ple are feeling an inadequacy, a
lack of confidence to meet the re
sponsibilities of the day and hour.
They realize that church leader
ship needs power, and “knowledge
is power.” Some 2re even coun=
seling with educators as to addi
tiona! college training. These are
hopeful signs, and those who have
sponsored this move, feel deeply
grateful.
The needs of the pulpit are
stressed too, and that the ministry
should be a living flame, inspir
‘ing its people to more victorious
living.
Mr. Howle has just returned
from thHe International Conven
tion of the Disciples of Christ at
Cincinnati, Ohio, and his theme
will be a fitting conclusion for this
special week. .
This season of united effort has
been under the direction of the
literature department of the Wo
mans’ Auxiliary of which Mes
dames Bernice Bussev, and Wil
liam Glenn are directors.

the Girl Scouts decided to bring
them again as a freat to Athens
boys and girls.
The new presentation for this
fall is a delightful, mrusical ver
sion of the beloved story of
“Aladdin and His Wonderful,
Lamp.” Children in the schools
are already learning two songs
from the show so they will be
able to join the puppets in sing
ing, just as they helped Pinocchio
decide his problems last year.
They will watch with open
mouths as Aladdin rubs his lamp
to make his genie appear and dis
appear; they will hold their
breath as they see vanishing cas
tles, flying carpets and moving
bridges. No boy or girl in Athens
should miss it. '
