John didn't dare come close to
me, since I was all covered with
paint by then, and we both had too
much respect for his best blue suit.
But he consoled me from the door
way.
“Just you wait,” he said, “and
I'll get to work too. Then we’ll
finish fast. Poor darling, you're
all tried out. Did you eat?”
I shook my head. “I can’t any

paint.”
Just then Freda came back
again. “I thought I saw you come
in, doctor,” she said, and handed
him a coverall with a big grin.
“And here’s a sandwich for you,”
she said, turning to me and placing
it on the drainboard. “I put some
turpentine in the bathroom. You
can wash the paint off there.”
After she left, I cleaned wup
enough to settle down with her
ham on rye, and I could almost
feel my disposition improving bite

thought as I ate. “Bosh!”
John, meanwhile, carefully don

the next wall as if it were an
anesthetized patient. The role of
peaceful waicher appealed to me
far more than that of an active
worker, but as soon s I finished
eating, I pitched in too.

COLD SORES ATTACK WHEN THE
RESISTANGE OF BODY IS LOW
BY EDWIN P. JORDAN, M. D,
Written for NEA Service
Most people are bothered fronr
time to time with cold sores, par
ticularly on their lips. Cold sores
are particularly likely to develop
when one is run down or has some
infection. A few people have al
most constant trouble with them
without apparent reason.
The correct medical name for
cold sores is herpes simplex.
Herpes is caused by a virus which
produces watery blisters on the
skin, particularly on or near mu
cous membranes, like the lips.
Bhe virus which causes herpes is
a living organism and can pro
duce a reaction in susceptible
animals, especially rabbits.
It is difficult to know why her
pes behaves as it does. One would
expect that it would be contract
ed only from another persons
who harbor the virus, Actually
it does not seem to be highly
contagious but comes mostly
when the resistance is weakened
by any one of several causes, in
cluding infectious diseases, artifi
cial fever treatments, certain vac
cinations and overexposure to the
sun. One theory for this is that
the virus remains in the tissues
and becomes active whenever the
