Teen-age Study Group will
meet in the Athens High School
Cafeteria at 8 o’clock on Thurs
day evening, Feb., 16. The pro
gram will be a discussion by
boys and girls en “Ways in
which relations between parerts
and teen-agers can be improv
ed.” Miss Emeliza Swain, who
has a wide backgrournd of ex
perience, will direct the discus
sion, but the ideas expressed by
the boys and girls will be their
own. Those taking part are Har
riet Snow, Janet Simpson, Bobby
Singleton, Louis LeConte and
Pat Bowden. All interested in
teen-age problems are invited to
attend. '

Council Church
Women Made
Survey On Aged
The Council of Church Women,
which is interested in the prob
lem of the care of the aged, re
cently requested four of its mem
bers to make a brief survey re
lating to this problem through the
state. - Mrs. J. W. Bailey, Mrs. S.
C. Moon, Mrs. W. A. Rowe and
Mrs, €. C Wilson, were the mem
bers delegated and they visited a
number of homes for the aged be
tween here and Savannah.
* Several .of -the -homes visited
‘were 'privately operated to care
for the eonvalescent and aged. One
home " was ‘donated by a private
individual as a home for the aged
men and is now operated with aid
of funds. from the Community
Chest. Church groups assist in
providing clothing, recreation pro
gram, .etc. Another - interesting
home visited was maintained by a
church group through private con
tributions. .
The Council of Chtirch "Women
hopes to be able to make a loeal
survey of needs of the aged with
the cooperation of the churches
and . other interested groups. 'On
the basis of this projected study it
is hoped that recommendations
leading to desirable action will be
made. - s

Gaines Home Club
School Lunchroom
The Gaines Home Demonstra
tion Club held its regular meeting
in the school lunch room Tuesday
afternoon at three o’clock.
The meeting was presided over
by Mrs. E. A. Carruth, president.
The devotional was conducted by
Mrs. Alice Hancock. The theme
of the inspirational devotional was
“Being Strengthened Through
Christ.” The reading from the Bi
ble was followed by a short prayer.
The roll call showed a total of
twenty-one members present. This
was followed by the reading of
the minutes of the last meeting
which were promptly -adopted.
- Mrs. Smith gave a demonstration
on “asparagus au gratin” which
was followed by a brief review of
the seven basi¢ foods. .
An announcement. was made
concerning two meetings of im
portance to all club members. The
February council meeting to be
held at the Georgia Power Com
pany kitchen at ten o’clock Feb
ruary 21 and the District Home
Improvement Clinic to be held at
the State Extension . Building,

After a brief business session
refreshments consisting of block
ice cream and cake which symbo
lized the spirit of Valentine’s Day
were served by the hostesses Mes~

On February 11
The W. M. S. of Pleasant Grove
held its regular meeting at the
church Saturday afternoon, Feb.
11, with 14 members present. Mrs.
Hoyt Nelms, president, presided.
Mrs. Wally Bradley led the de
votional “The Precious Fruit of
the Earth,” Matt. 23:8-12, Acts
13:1-3, Col. 3:11, followed by
prayer by Mrs. Garn Smith.
The program “How Christian Is
America?” was presented by Mes
dames Grace Browning, R. L. Kes=-
ler, Elmer Smith and Hoyt Nelms.
Mrs. Evie Philips was welcomed
as a new member.
All of the organizations will hold
a meeting at the church Saturday
afternoon, February 28. Each|
member is urged to attend this |
meeting and to bring a sacrificiall
gift for the Amie Armstrong offer- |
ing to help in this great task of |
winning the homeland for Christ. |
The meeting was closed with
prayer by Miss Irene Fields.

Sail Today;
On Cancer Trip
Mrs. H. B. Ritchie sails from
New York today (Thursday) for
San Juan, Puerto Rico, where the
American Cancer Society is send
ing her to help organize the can
cer control program in the Island.
Puerto Rico become the sixty
first division of the Society last
spring when the Puertorican
League Against Cancer appealed to
it for assistance in furthering its
work. . The ~ League had been
formed ten years prior to that,
had built a cancer hospital in San
Juan, and was carrying on a pro
gram of education and service,
Mrs. Ritchie, as Deputy National
Commander of the Society's Field
Army, assigned to the Southeast
ern States, has had the new Di
vision added to her region. The
Executive Secretary of the Puerto
Rican organization attended the
ACS training school for new work
ers.held in Juné in New York. Two
other representatives, a doctor and
a lay worker, joined the other
states of this region in Lexington,
Kentucky in ‘the fall fcr their bi
ennial meeting.: Since that time,
thé heads at the Society’s Medical
and Scientific. Department and of
its Statistical Research Department
have visited Puerto Rico te work
with staff personnel and the medi
cal group guiding the program.
Mrs. Ritchie continues with as
sistance-in training the office force
and volunteers in public educa
tion and lay service activities.
Mrs. Ritchie has been with the
American Cancer Society since the
formation of its Field Army in
1936, serving first as Commander
of its Georgia Division, and since
1944, as Deputy National Com
mander, unde: its rigional setup.

ned to visit all young people and
invite them to the class. The next
discussion was for everyone to
write some laws - for the class,
then combine together for eon=
stitution.
