Tnman States Facts For Reporters
I 1 Chips-On-Shoulders News Parley
BY DOUGLAS B. CORNELL
WASHINGTON, Feb. 16.— (AP) —President Truman
parked at reporters today in a chips-on-shoulders news
conference that they were disgruntled, he didn’t like their
attitude, and they ought to cool off.
That was all because he had given an exclusive inter
view to Arthur Krock of the New York Times and report
ers were trying to amplify some of the points in that in
terview regarding dealings with Russia.
ADD TRUMAN STATES — —P-1
The chief executive saig! with
obvious heat that he is his own
free agent, he will see whom he
pleases, say what he pleases, and
he isn't going to be censored by
anyone, |
When the President emphasized |
that he is going to do as he pleases,
somebody asked whether “you in
tentionally omitted ‘damn.’” |
Yes, the President said, but you}
can put it in if you like. |
Mr. Truman said that he him
self is not disgruntled in the slight
bst.
“Why should you be?” A woman_
rolumnist, Doris Fleeson, asked. |
She added “We think our busi
hess is quite important.” |
Sometimes I'm not so sure, Mr.
[ruman came back. :
After the atmosphere had clear
td a bit, the President said in re
sponse to questions that: ¢
No Dramatizing -
1. He doesn’t think the time
has arrived to send Chief Justice
Vinson to Russia but the door al
ways is open for discussion of
atomic controls. This doesn’t need
anv dramatizing.
2. There will have to be a wait
'o see whether California oilman
George Luckey drew the right con
slusion that Mr. Truman will run
'or President again in 1952,
3. The State Department
mswered Senator McCarthy (R.='
Wis) in saying there wasn’t a
word of truth in the Senator’s
charge that 57 Commusnists worked
for the Department,
4. This isn’t the proper time to
bress for things like a political
union of Atlantic pact nations,
There are other things more im
portant,
5. He {isn’t considering firing
Robert N, Denham as general
counsel of the National Labor Re
lations Board, regardless of urging
trom the CIO Executive Board,
6. The chief executive will
take the advice of his attorney

general on the subject of whether
there should be a federal law

7. The President isn’t listing
yet, all states in which he may

take them on a non-political tour
one of these days.
8.. There is no comment on the

for any such meeting.

TRUST ISLANDS
GO TO SCHOOL
PEARL HARBOR—(AP)—Edu
cation has arrived in the U. S.
Trust islands of the Pacific—and
everyone wants to go to school.
Grownups too. They want to learn
to speak English so they can sell
to American traders. They want
to learn arithmetic so they can
tell if they’re making money.
The heads of school districts in
the Marshalls, Truk, the Palaus,
Saipan and Yap told about it at
an educational conference spon
sored here by the Navy. The U. S.
took over the islands from Japan.
Oid Time Mill g
MILLINGTON, Md, = (AP)-—
Time hasn't been able to do much
more than gnaw up a set of grind
ing stones at the old Millington
Mill. Serenesy, under lts seventh
owner, the mill pursues the placid
business started 1868 years ago
when Thomas Gilpin built it with
bricks imported from England.
The structure has three stories,
with beams roughly hewn from
tree trunks, fastened with wooden
pegs. One of the thick timber
beams in the center of the first
floor ceiling shows a long gash
down the side, a memento of the
war of 1812, The mill was used
as a granary then and the gash
was produced by overioading the
second floor with grain,
Ex-GI Robert O’Dell is the cur=
rent owner of the venerable mill.
O’Dell and his brother Dorn now
grind out flour and corn meal for
the farmers and villagers of Mary
land’s sedate and withdrawn
Eastern Shore in much the same
fashion as the generations of mill
ers before them.

MORE LIGHT FOR ELK
LOGAN, Utah—(AP)—A ranch
er in Wyoming’s Star valley hung
a lighted lantern in his stock yard
in the bélief it would keep elk
away from his haystack. E. Von
Almen said he looked out late at
night to see if the light was still
burning. It was moving around
the stock yard.
“I discovered,” he said, “that an
elk bull had the lighted lantern
hanging from one of his antlers
and was showing the elk cows

THE SMITHS ARE
GRADUATING
BETHLEHEM, Pa.—(AP)—The
Smiths had their day at Lehigh
University’s mid-year commence

told, 180 seniors graduated.
And there’s still plenty of
Smiths in Lehigh’s classes today—
-25 in fact.
ROSES AID BEAUTY,
BOOST GOOD FARMING
FALLS CREEK, Pa. — (AP) —
Farms in this area of Pennsylvania
will be a lot more pleasant to look
at this year. Almost 50 miles of
live flower-bearing fences will be
planted. That will require 250,000
multiflora rose plants which will
be set out one foot apart on line
fences and field boundaries.
The farmérs say the primary
purpose is soil conservation, not
beauty. They say another factor
which is making the flower-bear
ing fences more and more popular
is that they’ll last for years and
will provide shelter for birds, rab
bits and other small game.
THIEVES MENACE STORK

out of an ambulance.
The vehicle ran dry before
reaching the hospital. However
the expectant father following the
ambulance in his own car, was
able to push it to the hospital.

Court By-Passes
Voter Law Verdict
ATLANTA, Feb. 16—(AP)—
Georgia’s Supreme Court today
by-passed a straight yes-or-no
answer on the constitutionality
of the 1949 voter re-registration
act.
The controversial measure, re
quiring a new registration of all
Georgia voters, was attacked from
many angles in a Richmond coun=-
ty case,
But the court ruled that the
validity of the re-registration act
did not actually affect the specific
question at stake in this case.
Therefore, the court said, it
would not pass upon the con
stitutionality of the law.
The new case is an outgrowth
of a previous effort to wipe out
the re-registration act. In the pre
vious case, Chairman David
Franklin of the Richmond County
Commissioners, refused to pay
county registrars under terms of
the re-registration law.
