‘Canada will honor its newly
developed oil industries with a
new stamp to be issued March 1.
It is a 50 cent green stamp and
will replace the current design of
this denomination. Depicted is a
scene in the oil fields of Alberta.
Two derricks, two oil storage tanks
and a gas flare are prominent. The
Canadian government believes that
the advances made in the discov
ery and development of natural oil
in Canada is one of the most sig
nificant post war contributions to
its economy. First day covers will
b 2 handled only by the Post Office
at Ottawa on March 1, 1950.

The Italian government is faced
with a problem.: It plans to issue
a commemorative stamp honoring
Guido Monaco ,who invented mus~
ical notes some 900 years ago. But
it must decide whether Monaco
had a beard or was clean-shaven.
Sculptors who chiseled his life
size statue in the portico of the Uf
fizi Gallery in Florence portrayed
‘Guido with a long beard. How
ever, a miniature discovered in Vi
| enna shows him with the clean
shaven face of a monk.
While the government ponders
whether to give Guido whiskers,
the townspeople of Arezzo, his
native village, are divided into two
camps—pro-beard and anti-beard.
