Another Woman, Radio Station
Owner Enter Governor’s Race

i Another woman and a radio station owner jumped into
the already crowded race for governor today.
The woman is-Mrs. Pat Hungerford of Gray, a 37-year
old blonde, mother of two children, a registered nurse
and Jones County Commissioner, The radio man is John
R. Bartlett of Quitman, owner and manager of Station
WEKMA and former close associate of Ex-Governor E. D.
Rivers.
Both promised vigorous statewide campaigns, They in
creased the field of announced gubernatorial hopefuls to
seven—and the qualifying date hasn’t even been set yet.

Barlett said he was tired of try
ing to get various “anti-{almadge
leadership” to unite behind one
man and was forced to announce
himself,” in the absence of a sin

The Quitman radio owner added
that Augusta politico Roy Harris
told him he (Harris) would not
seek the nomination and indicated
he would support Gov. Herman
Talmadge. Talmadge has not an
nounced he will run, but his entry

In a letter to Harris, Barlett
made these observations on several
leading political figures:

mon candidate for progressive
Georgia and has skulked from the
arena for the duration of the
struggle.”
Former Gov., M. E. Thompson—
“defying all logic, has cast him
self in the humiliating role of a

Mrs. Hungerford told the Tele
graph that “this year the people
and not the politicians will select
the next Governor of Georgia,
people who like myself have chil
dren, pay taxes—average citizens
who are interested in good govern=
ment.”
Politics is not new to Mrs, Hun
gerford, Two years ago she de
feated 11 men for the office of
Jones County Commissioner. Her
slogan then: “You kiss the babies,
I'll change the diapers.”
In her statement to the Tele
graph, she said her platform will
include financing the Minimum
Foundation Program for Educa
tion, tax revision with a sales tax
if necessary, expanded health and

BURGLARS SENTENCED
Three burglars pleaded guilty
before Judge Henry West today
and were sentenced to prison
terms.
John Campbell, 20 year-old ne
gro, pleaded guilty to a series of
thefts from outomobiles through
out the city. The case was cracked
by City Detectives Walt McKin
on jr., and E. E. Hardy, Judge West
sentenced him from one to three
years on three counts with the
terms to run consecutively. He re
ceived a one to three year sentence
on the fourth charge with it to be
served concurrently with the third
Det. McKinnon sald Campbell
pleaded guilty to taking an SBS
pair of field glasses from a parked
car near the Cloverhurst Apart
ments. The glasses belonged to
E. L. West,
The negro said he made several
raids on cars parked in front of
a fraternity house at 198 South
Hull street. On one trip he said he
stole a tuzedo valued at $75 and
pair of trousers to a suit and a
sports shirt. On another trip he
stole a blue suit. :

street but the owner had not been
located as yet.
Meanwhile, 18-year-old Thomas
Dixon pleaded guilty to breaking
in Dixie Weavers on Bread street
last Saturday night. He was ar
rested along with another youth
by County Officer Jimmy Wil

Dixon was sentenced from three

The woman candidate added she
believes in leaving the lquor bus
iness to private operators.

“State liquor stores would mor
ally put every citizen in the liquor
business,” she explained. “This we
do not want.”
The Jones commissioner said
Georgia needs the $17,000,000 from
liquor taxes, “but we do need
stricter enforcement of regula
tions regarding liquor.”
In his letter to Harris, Barlett
mentioned Arnall, Townsend, Har
ris, Thompson and “Rivers,” ap
parently a reference to ex-Gov,
Rivers.
He said this group *“has effec
tively abandoned this great Geor
gia of ours to the bitter promises
of a new and more terrible Tal
madge dictatorship.
Planks in Barlett’s platform in
clude home rule, tax revision, ex
panded health program, improved
and extended educational system,
development of a long-range high~
way plan, reorganization of the
State Patrol and the GBI and a
constructive penal rehabilitation
program. .
The radio station owner also
said he would give Georgians a
chance to choose between bone
dry prohibition strictly enforced
or a state-owned liquor system.
Other announced candidates are
ex-Gov. Thompson,. Mrs, J. W,
Jenkins of Columbus, C. O. (Fat)
Baker of Athens, Pat Avery of
Rome, and “Doc” Everett of Way-
Cross.

CAR MYSTERY SOLVED
A ten-year case concerning a
stolen car has been solved,
Everret Clack, held by county
authorities on numerous bad check
charges, has been charged with
stealing an automobile in 1940 be
longing to Burt L. Beussee. The
car was found wrecked.
- Clack has been bound over to
the next term of superior court on
this charge.
. Meanwhile surrounding coun=-
ties continue to report bad checks
' passed in their areas by Clack.
The total to date reads, one from
f Oconee, two from Banks, one from
Jackson, three frem Clarke, two
from Madison and possible others
from Barrow county.
Clack was arrested here last
week by members of the Sheriff's
office ending a four-year search.
Authorities said that Clack had
been in and out of the city since
1946 but they were never able to
' nab him. Once Clack hired a taxi
' cab to flee town. He paid the cab
driver with a $29 phoney check.
