seing Grownup lsn't Half The Fun
You Thousht It Would Be When Young
BY HAL BOYLE :
NEW YORK.— ' (AP) —Being
grownup isn’t half the fun you
thought it would be when young.
Every child dreams of the time
when “he will be as tall as the
adults who tower above him, and
have as big a voice, and money of
his own in his pocket.
To him all grownups, even ‘the
kindest and most understanding,
are jeilors. And he bears for them
the profound distrust that a small
dog does for a larger ‘one; the
feeling of a midget, who knows
his own weakness, toward a giant
who doesn’t seem to. know his
own strength.
The attitude of a child to a
grownup is a mixture of envy,
frustration and admiration. And
the thing he resents most is ?he
fact he is so dependent upon him.
The trouble is they live in two
Separate worlds, and the bridge
that conects them is a one-way
bath that the child must move
along more slowly than he wants
to. s i
: o
To him his world is a’ highly
complex- one, i full of doubts,
fears and forbidden- ecstasies—a
world in which' there are only a
few things he gan do and many
things he can’t. Naturally, then,
0 his eyes the adult world is a
simple and desirable world, What
roblems could adults have? They
‘an stay up as late as they like,
0 so a movie whenever they
Want to, and buy all the candy
their big fat stomachs will hold.
Must Be Crazy
What makes grownups so often
ict cross and irritable then? Why,
they must be crazy. And I think
every ‘child lis secretly convinced
that every grownup really is
toucheq in the head. =
. L can remember one of my
lather’s friengs saying to me

HEART CLINIC OPENS
ful and pretentious tyrant, lean
ing on his authority to hide his
own weakness. The youth has a
two-way view then, and often he
wonders if it wouldn’t be better
to crawl back into childhood than
to become an adult like those he
sees around him.
But the path is still one-way.
He has to go on, reluctantly or
not. And once he does become a
grownup he finds himself a pris
oner in a new and strange jail.
Why it isn’t a simple thing at all!
Tall Now
Sure, he is tall now — but so
are those around him. Sure, he
can run fast—but there isn’t any
thing to run for, unless he is a
politician. Sure, he can buy all
the ice cream cones he wants, but
he only wants one, if any. And
there are so nrany hard-to-get
hold things he never had to
worry about as a child—a job, a
wife, and new toys like automo
biles.
Being an adult, knowing their
problems, for the first time in
life he begins to pity them and
himself for the spot they're in.
When he has children, he real
izes he is not their jailor—not
from his standpoint. He is their
loving prisoner, who sometimes
must hurt them while trying to
help them. He hates to say
“don’t” to them, but he feels he
has to.
No, being a grownup isn’t the
fun a child thinks it is. It is just
the dreams of childhood encased
in a shell of duty and responsi
bility.
