of my country,” he said, “that
there came long ago that sweetest
religious song ever . written—the.
Twenty-third Psalm. It is all a
simple shepherd song, the life of
a shepherd from first to last.” |
“The Lord is my shepherd I
shall not want.” There is the open=-
ing strain of its music; in that
chord is sounded the key-note
which is never lost till the plain
tive melody dies away in the song’s i
end.” He maketh me to lie down in
green pastures” nourishment-rest.
“He leadeth me beside the still
waters.” “As the Hebrew words
put it, He leadeth me beside the
waters of quietness.” The lhep-}
herd keeps in mind one thing——ho‘
must lead his flock to a drinking
place. Sheep are afraid of moving
waters. “He restoreth my soul.”
The shepherd must ever be on the
watch restore the sheep when
wandering. “He leads me in the
paths of righteousness for his'
name’s sake.” The shepherd goes
ahead leading the sheep in the
right paths. “Yea though I walk‘
through the valley of the shadow
of death, T will fear no evil, for
thou art with me.” Sometimes a
sheep will become frightened of a
wolf. The shepherd sounds a call.
The sheep know the voice of the
shepherd and are soon quieted.
“Thy rod and thy staff they com
fort me.” The shepherds carry a
crook for guiding the sheep and a
rod for defence. God comforts
souls that heed His voice. |
“Thou preparest a table before
me in the presence of my enemies.”
God’s care for men in a world of
trouble. “Thou anointest my head
with oil, my cup runneth over.”
God’s care is not for the sick only,
but for those who are just weary
and worn. Then when the day is
over and the sheep are safe within
the fold, what contentment, what
rest. “Surely goodness anfl mercy
shall follow me all the days of my
life and I will dwell in the house
of the Lord forever.,” The song is
hushed and the sheep are at rest,
safe in the good shepherd’s fold.
The twenty-third Psalm is likened
to “The Song Of Our Syrian
Guest.”
Mrs. R. L. Dowdy had a unique
feature on the program, “Stop The
Music.” The members of the class
looked on with envy as Mrs. J. W,
0. McKibben captured the “grand
prize”’ a corsage of red geraniums.
A social half hour followed while
the numbered shamrocks were
matched for the eating of refresh
ments of Russian tea, cheese cris
pies, cake and mints, served by the
hostesses Mrs, R. L. Dowdy, leader
of the group, Mrs. Dan Hill, Mrs.
G. W. Joiner, Mrs. Fred Moon, Mrs.
L. O. Price and Mrs. Willie D.
Woodward.
